Buzzing About… HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER

Miss last night’s episode? Here’s what you need to know about HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER’s “Trilogy Time”

AIRDATE: 4/09/12 WRITER:: Kourtney Kang DIRECTOR: Pamela Fryman SYNOPSIS: Barney’s inability to cohabitate with Quinn (Becki Newton) serves as the impetus for him to join Ted and Marshall in their traditional Star Wars trilogy re-watch resulting in a handful of hilarious jumps through time that illuminate the gang’s hopes, dreams and realities. INTRODUCED: A “chick” to Ted’s 2015 trilogy re-watch! NOTABLE QUOTABLE: “If you’re not trilling it at least once every three years, the Dark Side wins.” Or at least that was Marshall’s way to get Ted to brush off studying for their Wesleyan College ECon final and indulge in a little “Trilogy Time.” LESSON LEARNED: By the year 2015, Ted will not only have met the titular mother, but become a father as well! CRITIQUE: Despite the fact that those clever HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER writers infuriatingly failed to show Barney’s ring finger in the flash-forward to 2015, it should come as no surprise that last night’s flashback heavy HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER resulted in one of the season’s strongest episodes to date. After-all, not only did the trip down memory lane afford the show the opportunity for countless gags including Hoarder Ted, Moustachioed Marshall and numerous Newspaper headlines like “President Dean Calmly Addresses the Nation” and “America Regrets Giving Bush a Surprise Third Term,” it served as the motivator for Barney to grow up in terms of his relationship with Quinn. What’s more, it reassured those of us who were struck by the somewhat cruel and unusual punishment that was seeing a happy Ted and Robin together via flashback (and faux flashback) form that our hero’s happily ever after is quite literally just around the corner. GRADE: B+
