Miss last night’s episode? Here’s what you need to know about CASTLE’s’ “Murder, He Wrote”
AIRDATE: 10/15/12 WRITER: David Grae DIRECTOR: Rob Bowman SYNOPSIS: Castle and Beckett’s attempt to escape to the Hamptons for a romantic getaway far from the prying eyes of the precinct are stymied when a dying man stumbles into Castle’s beautiful backyard. What followed was an impromptu murder investigation that would make REVENGE’s Emily Thorne proud as the show’s dynamic duo teamed up with a small town’s well-intentioned, albeit inexperience sheriff to find the killer. Meanwhile in Manhattan, Ryan and Esposito spent their energy trying to uncover the identity of the mystery man that Beckett is dating! INTRODUCED: Castle’s much-talked about Hampton hideaway. Said Castle to an understandably questioning Beckett, “I’m not going to deny that I have brought other women up here. But, none of them were you.” HISTORIC MOMENT: Sorry Esposito, Ryan became the first one of New York’s finest to discover the truth about Beckett’s dating life. NOTABLE QUOTABLE: “I’m not James Patterson rich, but I do okay,” was how Castle responded while Beckett took in his not-so-humble Hampton abode. CRITIQUE: Littered with laugh-out-loud one-liners — including but not limited to Castle’s wink-wink-nudge-nudge to the fandom as he discussed what his and Kate’s Brangelina-esque nickname should be (“No, no. We’re Rickkate. Wait. We’re Kate-ick… Caskett. Ooh, that’s good, because of the whole murder thing!”) and Beckett’s reaction “Ya-Think?!” to Castle’s “Call 911” when their romantic rendezvous was interrupted by a gunshot ridden richie-rich type falling into his pool — “Murder, He Wrote” doesn’t just perfectly incapsulate everything we love about this series but served as the perfect model for how any and all current and future showrunners might wish to sidestep the dreaded MOONLIGHTING curse in the process. Seriously. The only thing more fun than watching Castle and Beckett heat up the Hamptons for a romantic weekend away is baring witness to them bumble and stumble to keep their relationship a secret from their co-workers. Oh, and if that wasn’t enough of a cherry on top of an already stellar episode, “Murder, He Wrote” gets serious bonus points for not only genuinely surprising us with who the actual murderer was (Sad but True: We had the small town Sheriff pegged as the episodes’ guilty party from the very beginning!), but by having Ryan betray Esposito’s trust (Yet again!) when he neglected to fill him in on what he discovered about whom exactly Castle was canoodling with over the weekend! GRADE: A-
