Because there is no such thing as too much enthusiasm for the Tuesday October 23rd return of ABC’s hilarious one-two combo of HAPPY ENDINGS and DON’T TRUST THE B—- theTVaddict.com thought now might be as good a time as any to share a brief one-on-one with APARTMENT 23 creator Nahnatchka Khan. Catching up during summer’s not-so-recent Television Critics Association Press Tour Party, Khan, was only too happy to take a few minutes to preview season two, the awesomeness that is James Van Der Beek and some of the hijinx ahead for Dreama Walker’s June and Krysten Ritter’s Chloe.
Looking back on your first season, what were you most proud of?
Nahnatchka Kahn: Oh my God, so much. I’m just so proud that we can do a comedy that’s out there and starring these crazy women. To me, the fact that we don’t make any apologies, like no one is ever like, “I’m Sorry,” I love that about our show. That kind of outrageous behavior, especially on ABC, it’s such a fun thing.
Before creating DON’T TRUST THE B—-, you spent six years on AMERICAN DAD! What, if anything did you learn from working under the comedic genius that is Seth MacFarlane, Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman?
I learned so much working on AMERICAN DAD, but ultimately I learned that while character and story matter, at the end of the day it has to be funny. To me, I wasn’t content just doing a smile show. I see a lot of show on Network where you smile, and it’s pleasant but you’re not laughing. And for me, what I’m striving to do with these great girls is make a laugh out loud funny show.
One of last season’s biggest surprises was the trajectory of June and Chloe’s relationship. Was it your intention that by the end of the first season they’d become such fast friends versus remaining adversaries throughout?
Because we had a truncated season of seven episodes from the thirteen we shot, last season’s episodes were aired out of order. So some of the ones that aired were from later in the season, where June and Chloe’s friendship had progressed a little farther.
The pairing of your show with HAPPY ENDINGS sounds like my idea of comedy heaven, is there anything you can tease in terms of a potential crossover?
[Editor’s Note: This interview was conducted prior to the shooting of an actual crossover!] We would love to do something. [HAPPY ENDINGS Executive Producer] Jonathan Groff just pitched me a really funny idea where at the end of their show they’ll be watching DAWSON’s CREEK and be like, “That was a great show, whatever happened to that guy?” And then they’ll say whatever they think happened to James and we’ll go straight into our show. I’d love to do it.
What do you peg the odds at nabbing Katie Holmes for a DAWSON’S CREEK reunion?
She’s welcome, James welcomes her and I think we have a funny idea of what she could do on the show. I just think it’s funny if there is some unspoken bad blood that her and James haven’t talked about. And perhaps, she hears that something bad happened to James, so she shows up in a red dress with champagne at what she thinks is his funeral and is like “Ding Dong the Beek is Dead!” Or something like that.
The way in which you have written the character of “James Van Der Beek” has been a laugh riot. Anything you can tease in terms of what fans can expect from him this season?
Well, he’s continuing on the DANCING WITH THE STARS train and has a fun experience doing that. We’re also going to bring back the “Beek Jeans” line that he’s trying to launch and there’s going to be a quasi-DAWSON’S CREEK reunion that may not work out very well. So yeah, we have a lot of good stuff for him.
And finally, in terms of June and Chloe’s relationship, what are some of the challenges they’ll face this season?
Chloe is going to meet a potential love interest who is the first guy who maybe is a little bit her match. She’s pulling one of her scams and he flips the table to on her. While June actually gets a job back in the financial district so we’re going to delve into that whole world as well.
