The year may be 2013, but to the Headless Horseman, the year does not matter. Whether the year is 1790 or present day, his thirst for blood and destruction remains unquenched. Fortunately for the small town of Sleepy Hollow, another man has arisen from his cold grave — the only man to have defeated the Headless Horseman — Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison). However, the last time Ichabod and the Headless Horseman crossed paths, the Horseman lost his head — literally. So supernatural being or not, the Horseman was beheaded and his head carefully hidden away. Yet something has awakened him now and he wants his head back so that he can finish his deadly quest.
The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, it sounds like a long forgotten tale from yesterday. But when one arrives in Sleepy Hollow, headless or not, it bodes bad tidings. Sleepy Hollow is not just a hot-bed of biblical lore, but also of the occult. For two centuries, the creatures of the night have been slowly awakening and preparing for their own form of battle.
For Detective Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie) and the local police department, they are unsure what to make of this sudden onslaught of nightmares coming to life. There’s Ichabod who swears he is from another time; there is a being who looks to be headless running around killing people; and there are other things swimming around the edges that no one can put a name to yet. But Abbie is an open-minded woman and detective. She may not understand how people from over 200 years ago are suddenly popping up around town, but she is pragmatic enough to know that Ichabod seems to know a lot of information that is useful in dealing with this unusual crime spree.
Alas, for poor Ichabod, life in the 21st Century is not exactly what he was expecting. For one, he is in search of his lost love Katrina Crane (Katia Winter); for surely if he survived as a man-out-time, then surely she must have too, and with biblical prophesies coming to life and occult practices flourishing, maybe Katrina found a crack in time and can make her way back to Ichabod if he can find the key.
SLEEPY HOLLOW embraces its grand absurdity and yet offers a harrowing look at what it might look like if villains out of American folklore began coming to life. It would be a living nightmare. But it would also be a bit comical and entirely outrageous — all elements which make great storytelling.
For those looking for a new television series that will be rip-roaring in adventure and fast in pace, they will enjoy SLEEPY HOLLOW and all its unique and bizarre inhabitants. Surely the phrase Headless Horseman is one’s first clue that there is something supernatural and rather extraordinary going on in SLEEPY HOLLOW.
