Doesn’t matter what you’re watching, if Jimmy Fallon’s in it you know you’ll be smiling. You smile because there is no one who loves their job more than he does, because he is probably one of the kindest people to ever grace us with his presence, and because he is most likely wearing a blonde wig shouting “Ew” at the camera.
Fallon premiered as the new host of THE TONIGHT SHOW on February 17;Th a day people will talk about decades from now. Just like how my generation still talks about Johnny Carson’s premiere over 50 years ago. The episode featured an assortment of who’s who in Hollywood. Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Robert De Niro, to name a few, all turned out for Jimmy’s big show. The guests for the night were Will Smith and musical guest U2, who surprised the audience and millions of viewers at home with an impromptu acoustic version of their Golden Globe winning hit “Ordinary Love” Fallon opened the show with an emotional monologue explaining how the show will run, and how grateful he was, as well as a quick shutout to his adorable family in the audience. After the mock opening Fallon went back behind the famous curtain and re entered his new studio. He gave his actual monologue and the crowd went wild, from the minute the curtain opened cheers and claps roared. (Which I’m sure the audio mixer loved) Fallon did a bit with Will Smith, the evolution of hip hop dancing and the crowd ate it up, he then moved on to a breathtaking rooftop performance by U2. The show then went on with the interview with Smith, U2 later joining on the interview couch. At the end of the show Fallon said “we’ll see you tomorrow.” Which he will, he will see us tomorrow, and the night after that, and for many years to come.
I personally feel privileged to witness Fallon’s first episode as host of THE TONIGHT SHOW. When my generation grows up and has children of their own, their kids will grow up with him. They will grow up laughing with him, go to bed watching him, and will be inspired by him. Fallon is more than just a host that just interviews the top celebrities and promote their latest movies; he cares. He is so grateful and humble with everything he does. He knows that hosting this show is a big deal and isn’t something to be taken lightly, he respects the show, loves it, and believes in it. I think he’ll be a perfect host, not because he looks great in a suit (he definitely does, that new tonight show suit looked GREAT) but because of the uncontainable love he pours into every show. Fallon is rare, his talent is unmatched, from the first glance at camera to the goodnights he puts you at ease, he makes you feel comfortable. That’s all we want, we want to feel safe, and comfortable, we want to laugh after a long day, and Fallon does that. He provides us with that release and escape from the real world. This quote represents not only Fallon as a person, but how he’ll be as a host, and personally I can’t wait to see what amazing things he has in store for us. “I just want everyone to forget about their problems, watch my show and be like, “Thanks God. I can go to sleep.” That’s the way Johnny Carson was for me growing up…that’s what I want to be. I want to make it cozy. I want people to feel safe, having me in their homes, and just have it be someone you go to bed to.”
