STAR-CROSSED Scoop: Brina Palencia Talks Portraying an Alien Girl Fascinated by Humans

Brina Palencia star-crossed

In the CW series STAR-CROSSED, just like Emery (Aimee Teegarden) has been fascinated by the Atrians since Arrival Day ten years earlier, so has Sofia (Brina Palencia) been captivated by the humans. So souls are just open to the possibility of embracing new cultures — even one so alien to their own.

Sophia, as described by Brina, is a gentle soul whose curiosity may get the better of her. She is so open-hearted that it is hard for her to understand why the humans and Atrians are unable to get along and accept each other. In her mind, they are all just people who are different and mysterious and something wondrous to get to know.

In an exclusive interview, Brina Palencia talks about Sophia’s great love for everyone and the beauty of Sophia and Roman’s sibling relationship:

As the moral compass for the Atrian side of the STAR-CROSSED story, Sophia is a loving soul. A little too trusting perhaps and a bit naive, but her big heart just wants to embrace everyone, no matter who they are. Perhaps it was the upbringing under father that led Sophia to believe the humans only kept the Atrians separate because they did not know them. So for her, Sophia just wants to find ways to reach out and let the humans know that there is no reason to fear the Atrians. Her tendency to see the good in everyone is beautiful and so pure.

Like Sophia’s open-heart towards the humans, she also has a strong love for her brother Roman (Matt Lanter). The strength and love of that relationship is something that Brina relates to on a personal level coming from a loving family herself, and she loves getting to share that on-screen in the Sophia/Roman sibling relationship. Their closeness and protectiveness of each other is something every family should have.

It is Sophia’s big, beautiful heart that enchants us and those around her. She believes that you fall in love with who you fall in love with, no matter what race or species. Love is just love. Given how loving Sophia is, it will be no surprise when she gets her own love-interest this season on STAR-CROSSED, and that love will only make Sophia stronger and more confident. It will be a joy to see her when she finds it.

In the meantime, to see Sophia’s amazing journey be sure to tune in for all new episodes of STAR-CROSSED on Monday nights at 8:00 p.m. on the CW.
