Is everyone’s jaw up off the floor? There were some really nice surprises in this week’s episode, entitled “The Suicide Squad.” For one, who would of thought that Diggle (David Ramsey) and Deadshot (Michael Rowe) might actually be on the road to becoming friends — well, maybe just war-time buddies? Then that final scene with Amanda Waller (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) and Oliver (Stephen Amell) was completely out of the blue as well.
At a recent press conference, David Ramsey and executive producer Marc Guggenheim took a few minutes to share some insight into what is next for Diggle, Deadshot and Amanda Waller.
How difficult was it for Diggle to be working with Floyd Lawton/Deadshot again?
DAVID: Floyd is the guy that killed his brother. But there is a very interesting dynamic that comes out of this episode between Lawton and John Diggle. There is a lot of growth that comes out of both those characters. But at the end of the day, Floyd Lawton is a hired gun. There’s bigger clogs in the wheel. There are puppeteers behind him that are pulling the strings. I think John Diggle comes to a closure after this episode with Floyd.
Going forward, how will that experience change him?
DAVID: There are a few things that I think Diggle comes out of this with. Diggle is a real black-and-white kind of guy. He’s a soldier and a Boy Scout in the sense that his lines of justice are clearly delineated. As for his experience with the Suicide Squad, things are bit more gray for him. Ultimately he has to work with the bad guys to get something good done. That doesn’t sit very well with him, though I don’t think he would necessarily hesitate doing that again.
Why kill off Shrapnel (Sean Maher)?
MARC: That was something that came about because if we were going to do the Suicide Squad and were really going to sell the idea that any of these guys are expendable, we should do the thing you’re least expecting, which is we should kill one of them off and we should do it pretty soon. . . So everyone would go: Wow, they really are the Suicide Squad. No one can get out of this team alive. . . Shrapnel just felt like the right character because Shrapnel sort of has all these ideals and sees himself as this sort of crusading patriot. If anyone was going to bolt and be killed for it, he would be the most likely candidate.
What is going on with Oliver and Amanda Waller?
MARC: We certainly tease a backstory for Oliver and Amanda, and we tease a sense of future involvement. . . You haven’t seen the last of Amanda and you haven’t seen the last of the Suicide Squad.
