You don’t have to be a genius working at one of the top computer companies in the country to see how awesome SILICON VALLEY is. The new HBO comedy debuted last week and has received great reviews, and for good reason. The nerd fueled comedy centers around Richard’s (Thomas Middleditch) web design for a program called “Pied Piper” Richard was offered millions for this design but opted for the deal that offered him creative control over his company. The problem is Richard has no clue how to run his company, the only thing he does know is who he wants working on it, his friends. Richard’s team includes Erlich, (T.J. Miller) Gilfoyle, (Martin Starr) Dinesh, (Kumail Nanjiani) Big Head, (Josh Brener) and Jared. (Zach Woods)
In the second episode Richard comes to the realization that he knows very little about his company and has to design a business plan, he also has to accept the fact that he gave up an obscene amount of money so he could have control over his company, and he doesn’t want that to all be for nothing. He tries to mutter the courage we saw in the pilot and start making some executive decisions, the first being deciding whether or not to fire his friend, Big Head. He decides to keep him in the end but Big Head already accepted a deal from their old employer. In the final moments of the second episode Richard learns that the company he used to work for is decoding his website, they are trying to replicate it so they can sell it and play it off as their own. Now Richard not only has to deal with his somewhat unprofessional staff but he also has to race against the clock and turn out this website before his competitor does.
Overall, I think this show will be something very different and successful for HBO. It’s got a lot of heart and doesn’t resemble the other comedies currently on HBO, it isn’t like anything on television right now and I really think if they produce the rest of the season the right way they’ll have a really great show on their hands. It’s smart and witty, within the first episode they have you feel for the lead, it didn’t seem forced or unnatural, the characters are very likable and like ability helps a tremendous amount when a show is first starting out. The reason I started watching is because 1.For the most part HBO produces excellent content, and 2. Because Jenni Konner (GIRLS) kept raving about it on twitter and I pretty much trust anything she says. So if I haven’t convinced you enough check it out for yourself next Sunday at 10PM on HBO.
