Jason George portrays the passionate and lovable intern, Dr. Ben Warren on the ABC hospital drama GREY’S ANATOMY. I spoke with Jason about Ben and Miranda’s (Chandra Wilson) relationship, the cast’s last days on set, and Cristina’s (Sandra Oh) exit from the show.
How are Bailey and Ben doing? Now that he’s an intern do you think that makes the relationship easier because he’s constantly in the hospital?
Jason George: (Laughs) I think so! I think it smoothes things out, not just because he’s around more because of the OCD situation but also because Miranda is learning that she needs to respect the man that she’s with and he needs to respect himself. He gave up the thing he’s fallen in love with to take care of the woman he loved. In doing so she realized that was one of the things she loved about him, that he’s so passionate about what he does. So now he can have his cake and eat it too.
Do you think kids are in the future for them? I know Bailey already has a son from her first marriage.
I don’t know I mean that would be really interesting to get Tuck a sibling, that would be kind of fun. I personally love kids and I’ve always enjoyed when I’ve had scenes with kids. One of the big actor no no’s is to have scenes with animals or children because though your take maybe good you’re only going to get one good take out of them. And if you didn’t get a good take it’s your fault, but whenever I work with kids I get silly, not that I’m not silly most of the time. I would really enjoy something like that coming up.
Do you think Ben will step up as one of the top interns? We saw him sleeping on the job in last week’s episode.
(Laughs) I think Ben is going to be a rock star surgeon, I think everybody hits a wall every once in a while. He had been awake for a long time prior to the midnight surgery so I don’t think you’re going to see a ton of Ben falling down on the job sleeping.
How will Cristina handle not winning the Harper Avery? Will we continue from right where we left off in last week’s episode?
Your heart is set on something whether you want to admit it or not, whether it be an award or a person, and when you don’t get it you can play it off however you want. At the end of the day the heart wants what the heart wants.
How is working with Chandra?
It’s great, I still remember the first day I came to set because I was a huge fan of the show long before I was actually ever on it, and I remember thinking “Chandra’s love interest would be the Nazi, I’m gong to have to put my big boy actor pants on.” She doesn’t play around, that’s always been the case. Some of my favorite scenes with her are when it’s very few lines but its really about being in the moment. It’s a very actor-y thing to say but especially working with Chandra it’s very true. We have to be very present and just listen to each other, that’s a lot of fun. One of the greatest things I’ve learned from her is the grace she has when she’s directing and acting in episodes. That’s always been interesting to watch her go back and forth between the two seamlessly. Which is a skill that I’m trying to learn from her and Kevin McKidd, Debbie Allen mastered it a long time ago.
How is it around set lately?
It’s been really, really great the last few days. In addition to Sandra, Gaius (Charles), and Tessa (Ferrer) we have two of our showrunners, Tony Phelan and Joan Rater leaving. They are going on to new adventures so they bought a carnival for the cast and crew, big blowup slides a bounce house with a ball gun that launches nerf balls at each other. They got into a dunk tank, Tony and Rob Corn, another one of our executive producers. Everybody in the cast and crew could have a chance to sink them. It’s been a really great week, today’s been a rough one though because it’s the actual last day of shooting and there will be no doubt tears. There’s still the wrap party, we’ll see everybody at least one more time, and it’s a family nobody’s gonna lose touch with anybody. It is one of those things where you won’t see them everyday and that’s interesting, so today’s gonna be a pretty beautiful but I think tough day.
What can you tell us about Cristina’s exit from the show?
The only thing I can say about the show is it’s true to life. I think it’s how life feels; sometimes-unexpected things hit you from out of the blue
I’m such a huge fan of the show, I’m wondering if you could bring back any character that’s left the show, dead or alive who would it be?
That’s a hard one; I think I might bring back the interns that died in the shooting. (Laughs) That’s just not the way to go! Flunk out of the program, do something else, don’t get shot out of the program. That’s rough!
