Last night we said farewell to one of the most incredible, brilliant, and memorable characters of all time, Cristina Yang. Being I am a huge fan of the show and an even more enormous TV nerd, I thought I would write the character a goodbye letter. Comment below what you would like to say to our favorite cardio god!
Dear Cristina,
Can I call you Cristina? I feel like I’ve known you for a while now so calling you by your first name would be appropriate. Who am I kidding? Dr. Yang sounds a lot better! Anyway, I’ll get on with this. Dr. Yang, when we first met you a little over nine years ago we knew you would be something special. You didn’t just appear in the Pilot you crashed through it, you made your presence known and made sure we knew you were here for one reason, and that was to be the best.
Over the years you have shown us how you truly are the best. You kind of (I think it counts) won a Harper Avery, you successfully saved Derek Shepherd’s life, (Patrick Dempsey) and you kicked the boards butt. But even with all of those great accomplishments under your belt I think your greatest accomplishments are the people you’ve touched all while being a badass.
Before GREY’S girls would call each other their best friends because they didn’t know how else to express one of the most meaningful relationships in their life, now we are able to say, “you’re my person.” You and Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) relationship is one for the ages. It’s so special because in it’s own little dark and twisty way it is a love story. You both depend on each other and are there for each other no matter what. I think that’s what I’ll miss most about you when you’re gone. Meredith has had to deal with so much loss over the years and no one has been there for her like you.
Medicine comes first! There is nothing you are more passionate about than your work, and that is beyond inspiring. You never once wavered from your work, your goal was to fix people and that’s exactly what you did. You wanted to be a cardio god and you were. You are the best surgeon at that hospital. You may be leaving Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital but your legacy will continue there and will constantly motivate and encourage young interns.
When I think strong and empowering woman I think of you. Specifically, I picture you holding that fish on the dock in episode 10 of season 7. When you released all of the fear you had and just let it go, much like you in that scene I was in tears. It was such a strong image of you and I’m glad it was something us fans of the show were able to see. Thank you, Shonda Rhimes for that brilliant and emotional moment.
Lastly, thank you Sandra Oh for portraying this remarkable character. You and Cristina are an inspiration to us all.
I will miss you dearly.
