Summer television has been always a bit unpredictable as the Big 5 networks used to avoid launching new original programming during the summer months since so many television watchers were enjoying the great outdoors. But after a decade or more of watching cable television secure significant audiences for summer run TV shows, the Big 5 have begun to dabble with summer programming.
That does not mean it is any easier to figure out what TV shows are on or which are worth checking out. So in order to try to provide a list of what TV shows are upcoming to keep an eye out for and which to sample, here is a nice quick reference list for the Summer 2014:
Wednesdays (returned May 21st)
“Motive” 10 p.m. on ABC (Season 2, Warren Christie joins cast)
Wikipedia description: MOTIVE is a police procedural drama following the investigations of working class single mother Detective Angie Flynn (Kristin Lehman). Each episode reveals the killers and victims at the beginning, and the rest of the episode details the ongoing investigation, the killers’ efforts to cover up the crime, and slowly reveals the events leading to the crime via flashbacks.

Mike instead makes a living as a bicycle messenger, and is convinced by his friend, Trevor, to take part in a marijuana deal. Using his eidetic memory and knowledge of the law, Mike proves to Harvey that he is undoubtedly the best candidate for the position and is subsequently hired, despite having neither gotten a college degree nor attended Harvard. The series focuses on Mike and Harvey as they try cases for the firm while maintaining Mike’s secret.

“Falling Skies” 10 p.m. on TNT (Season 4 premiere)
Wikipedia description: Tells the story of the aftermath of a global invasion by extraterrestrials (including mechanical attack drones called “mechs”, a species of green-skinned six-legged beings known as “Skitters” that appear to control the mechs, and a third mysterious species known as the Overlords, or “espheni”, presumably the actual engineers of the invasion and the masters of the Skitters). Within a few days the invaders neutralized the world’s power grid and technology, destroyed the militaries of all the world’s countries, and killed over 90% of the human population. The aliens’ objectives are not explained, though the aliens try to round up children between the ages of 8 and 18 and attach a biomechanical obedience device onto (and into) their spines, referred to as a “harness”. The harness controls the child’s mind, and forcibly removing it generally kills the child. The story begins six months after the invasion and follows a group of survivors who band together to fight back.
