Television genres change all the time but one genre that is so far standing the test of time is that of the supernatural. It seems that we television folk just cannot get enough of all things supernatural. So what do we have in store this year?
Supernatural [Series 10]
Since its debut in 2005, Supernatural, has gone onto establish an extremely dedicated fanbase and as such, has become somewhat of a cult television series, as well as being the CW network’s longest running show. For those who are unfamiliar with the series, it focuses on two brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester, (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) who hunt demons, ghosts and all other things from the unnatural realm. Series 10 promises to be one of the most exciting yet, the end of series nine saw Dean succumb to injuries inflicted by Metatron (an archangel in Judaism and Christianity) and die. However, the closing shot of series nine saw the protagonist revived by the King of Hell, Crowley, with a parting shot of his demonic black eyes to bring the curtain down. Series 10, therefore, has a lot of questions to answer, no more so than can Dean be brought back to the side of the righteous or will he prove to be a formidable foe for his brother and the patrons of earth? Come fall, we will hopefully get our long awaited answers.
True Blood [Series 7]
There aren’t many television series as divisive as True Blood, you really do either hate it or love it. The premise of this show is looking into the co-existence between vampires and humans in the fictional town of Bon Temps. Centred around the relationship between human, Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) and Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), with support coming from Alexander Skarsgård, Rutina Wesley and Sam Trammell. The seventh, and final, series is going to be the most exhilarating yet. With the Hepatitis-V virus making infected vampires run amok and no vaccine imminent, it looks like we are heading for one monstrous battle between humans and uninfected vampires against the blood-lustful infected demons. Series 6 ended with a horde of infected vampires preparing to attack the Bellefleur house, so expect series 7 to start with one almighty bang. Whether or not Sookie and Bill manage to survive the series will become apparent on June 22.
The Vampire Diaries [Series 6]
Based on the hugely popular L.J. Smith book of the same name, The Vampire Diaries has gone onto become one of the most loved supernatural shows on television and takes life after death to a whole new level. Taking place in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, the story follows Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) and her encounters with the supernatural beings that plague the town. Elena, who is deeply in love with 163-year-old vampire Stefan Salvatore, has certainly had one of the more traumatic high school experiences – heartbreak is one thing but having to deal with vampires, witches and werewolves is something else. Series 6 will continue to answer questions about oblivion and of course every fan will be desperate to know what comes of Bonnie and Damon, who as of series 5 are no longer in the living world. Whether we will see them return remains to be seen but come Autumn all should become clear.
There is a reason why supernatural genres are proving to be extremely popular, mainly due to their diversity. They manage to channel romance, action and spirits from another world into extremely good television as well as allowing for it to cross gender divides.
