A newcomer to HEMLOCK GROVE, Madeline Brewer portrays Miranda Cates, a girl just passing through that gets inexplicably involved in the deepest mysteries hovering over the town. One would think that Miranda would just be an innocent bystander that gets in over her head, but as the series goes on, everyone will start to see that perhaps Miranda is someone who has brought a little bit of trouble with her. So do not let her carefully constructed facade fool you. She has a much bigger part to play than any of them expected.

In a press interview from the set, Madeline Brewer talked about who Miranda is, what role she has to play and just what is up with all those amazing tattoos all across her body.

Who is Miranda? What role does she have to play in Season 2?
MADELINE: Miranda is a graphic novelist, who was just innocently driving through Hemlock Grove on her way to California and, in true HEMLOCK GROVE fashion, things got weird and now she’s stuck there and becoming a very interesting part of the story.

She apparently also has a lot of tattoos.
MADELINE: They take a long time to put on. But it’s fun. When I first saw them, I thought, “It’s just like the type you put on with the water and peel them off.” But they are big and you have to get three people to hold it on my arm. Yet they’re cool. They are all designed by Miranda. They are really interesting and one of them is specifically important to the storyline. So keep an eye out for that. . . Miranda really progresses through the season. I think it takes a particular person to be completely inked up. You have to be kind of dedicated to it ’cause it’s going to be there forever. And Miranda’s had a difficult past and she’s made some difficult choices, relationship-wise and life-wise. I think when you first meet her that’s all you see, but as the season progresses, you see a much softer side of her.

How quickly do we meet Miranda in Season 2?
MADELINE: Episode 2. She comes on with a bang in a car crash.

Does Miranda get swept up in the outskirts of what is going on or does she get thrown into the Godfrey and Rumancek worlds?
MADELINE: She’s kind of right in the thick of it from the get-go. She becomes a pretty interesting part of the boys’ lives in ways that nobody really thought could happen, but it does.

How would you describe the tone of Miranda’s relationships with people on the show?
MADELINE: Bizarre and really just strange. That’s one of my favorite things about HEMLOCK GROVE is that it is just unique and just weird. And that’s really what’s happening with Miranda when she gets thrown into the middle of their vampire-werewolf world. That’s the only way I can explain it, the tone of it. It’s freakin’ weird.

Did Miranda arrive weird or was that imposed upon her?
MADELINE: I think Miranda, just like in her life and her background, she’s no stranger to bizzaro things. But this is a whole new level. When I first started reading about the character of Miranda, I found out that she donated blood for money. So she’s not a stranger to doing strange things. She’s kind of out there. But Hemlock Grove is just a whole new level of odd.

Are we to assume that Miranda may be a love interest for either Roman (Bill Skarsgard) or Peter (Landon Liboiron)?
MADELINE: Well, it’s television.

Have you seen the first season?
MADELINE: Oh, yeah.

They like to fight over blondes.
MADELINE: (Laughs) They really, really do. Aren’t I lucky?! But it’s TV, what do you expect? So that’s been fun.

So there might be a love-connection somewhere along the line?
MADELINE: (Laughs) Who knows.

Is Miranda looking for love?
MADELINE: No, actually. She just got out of a bad relationship with an evil, evil man.

Is the “evil man” going to track her down?
MADELINE: No, but that would be kind of interesting!

To find out whether Miranda ultimately ends up being a friend or foe for Peter and Roman, be sure to tune in on Friday, July 11th when the entire second season of HEMLOCK GROVE will be available for binge-viewing on Netflix.

(Editor’s note: Special thanks goes to Netflix which made this interview possible with a sponsored trip to the set of “Hemlock Grove.”)
