HEMLOCK GROVE Scoop: Madeleine Martin Teases Shelley’s Mysterious Journey in Season 2

Shelley Godfrey was one of those amazing mysteries of Season 1 of HEMLOCK GROVE. From the minute she was introduced, she captivated simply by her presence. She was the gentle-giant sister to Roman Godfrey (Bill Skarsgard), who seemed to see everything with her all-knowing eye and who would literally glow when someone touched her skin.

In the end of Season 1, Shelley was the hero that saved her brother and everyone else from the vargulf. But in doing so, it put Shelley in the crosshairs of Sheriff Sworn (Aaron Douglas), who shot her in the back as she tried to run away. Shelley’s fate is still to be determined, but can easily surmise that she did survive and she has a journey of her own this season on HEMLOCK GROVE.

In a press interview from the set, Madeleine Martin talked briefly about taking over her new role as Shelley (the role had been previously portrayed by Nicole Boivin in Season 1) and teased where Shelley’s story may go for Season 2.

How difficult is it portraying a character that looks to be about 7 foot tall?
MADELEINE: I luckily don’t have a lot of work to do. We have an amazing crew. I don’t know how they do it, but it’s amazing. The cameramen and the whole crew does all that work. I just show up. My job’s easy.

Do they make you stand on a box?
MADELEINE: (Laughs) Sometimes, especially because Bill [Skarsgard] is already 6 feet tall.

How long does it take for you to transform into character each day?
MADELEINE: It’s like a 3 1/2 to 4 hour process. The first day, I showed up on set and it was Halloween and it was great to be doing that on Halloween and it took like 4 1/2 hours. But they’ve gotten it down to about 3 1/2 and removal is probably an hour. It’s a challenge, but a welcome challenge. It’s why I was excited to play the part.

Have you gotten to do scenes as Shelley with Roman yet?
MADELEINE: I’ve gotten to stand next to him, but I haven’t to work with him yet. But that relationship will always be a crucial part of the show for sure.

What will Shelley be up to in Season 2?
MADELEINE: All I can say that Shelley is on the run and very isolated.

Is a lot of her interaction with characters we haven’t met yet?
MADELEINE: Yes. There’s a new character that is introduced and they sort of help each other out and get close. So she’s definitely separated from the rest of the Godfrey family.

To find out where Shelley is and who she encounters in her journey to find a safe haven in Season 2, be sure to tune in on Friday, July 11th when the entire second season of HEMLOCK GROVE will be available for binge-viewing on Netflix.

(Editor’s note: Special thanks goes to Netflix which made this interview possible with a sponsored trip to the set of “Hemlock Grove.”)
