Grey’s Anatomy Recap: “Got To Be Real”

This season is focusing a lot on Dr. Pierce, (Kelly McCreary) and for good reason. If Shonda (Rhimes) and the writers just threw her into the show and announced she was Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) half sister, people would hate her. Dr. Pierce is likable, and such a great addition to the show. It will definitely take some time for Meredith to warm up to her, but it seems Dr. Webber (James Pickens Jir) already has.

When Jo (Camilla Luddington) snapped, “She stole my Alex!” to Dr. Edwards (Jerrika Hinton) about Meredith all I wanted to tell her was ease up, would ya? Mer is going through Cristina (Sandra Oh) withdrawal, she just found out she has a new sister, (surprisingly not the first time for Meredith. Or even the second for that matter.) and now she has to deal with Derek being his usual childish self. She’s got a lot going on at the moment, and if she wants to get drunk with Alex (Justin Chambers) and protest, “I’m the sun, I’m the sun, and he can go suck it.” Then so be it.

Saddest moment of the episode has to be a tie between Richard Webber’s speech to Meredith about not knowing he had a child all of these years and how her mother took that away from him saying, “I would have liked to be a father, to know my child, to have a say. Your mother stole that from me.” The other terribly emotional scene also involved Dr. Webber but this time it wasn’t with Meredith but instead it was Dr. Pierce. Telling Webber that she knows he is her biological father, and that she’s known since the first time they met. But that he was too much of a coward to tell her the truth, and he didn’t want her. (We all know Webber and we all know he probably wanted her so badly and was thrilled to know she existed.

The episode didn’t focus on April (Sarah Drew) and Jackson (Jesse Williams) at all. Last season focused on their storyline a lot, I think an episode heavily focusing on them is coming soon.

Derek (Patrick Dempsey) and Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) had some sibling rivalry, which will definitely continue as the season progresses. She called him out on how selfish he is sometimes and how he can’t let anyone have anything of their own without him getting something from it. Prompting Derek to say, “I feel like she forced me” when talking about the reason he stayed in Seattle.
The episode ended with Dr. Bailey beating out Alex for the spot on the board, and Dr. Pierce finding out that Dr. Webber is her biological father.

Next week will have some more Dr. Pierce and Dr. Webber drama and definitely some more Derek and Meredith drama. Hopefully we will also get to see if Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) go through with the surrogate.

Best line of the episode: “Cristina and I would be dancing by now.”

Best moment: Dr. Pierce and Dr. Webber bonding over the splenectomy.
