We Shine the Spotlight on THE WALKING DEAD Star Sonequa Martin-Green

What is terminus? Is there really a cure? Why is Rick (Andrew Lincoln) always covered in blood? Hopefully we will have answers to those questions tonight in the season premiere of everyone’s favorite zombie drama, THE WALKING DEAD. We left off last season with terminus loading Rick, Carl, (Chandler Riggs) Daryl, (Norman Reedus) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) into a freight car and inevitably reuniting them with the rest of the group. Things are destined to get ugly this season and we can’t wait to see what will happen.

Sonequa Martin-Green plays Sasha on the deadly addictive AMC drama. I spoke with Green about her time on the show, which character she would love to bring back, and what we can look forward to in tonight’s premiere.

Were you a fan of the show before you were cast? What about Sasha stuck out to you?
Sonequa Martin-Green: I was a fan of the show beforehand, which made the opportunity to be a part of it very exciting. What stuck out to me the most about Sasha was her blunt honesty and straightforwardness. I was also moved by her relationship to her brother.

No one on TWD is ever really safe; aside from your character who would you like to see stick around for a while? Is there anyone that has died on the show that you would like to bring back?
I’d love to see everyone stick around! People dying is a harsh reality of the zombie apocalyptic world and we have to stay true to that, but I can’t say that I wouldn’t be overjoyed if somehow it could be done away with. I’ve always wished that I could’ve worked with Jon Bernthal. He’s an amazing actor and Shane was a wildly interesting character. It’d be cool to see him return.

Were there any scenes last season that shocked you? Were there any storylines that completely took you by surprise?
I feel like I’m always shocked and surprised at where the story goes. Sometimes we have an idea of where the story is going, at least from an emotional standpoint. But on a small degree I still enjoy the show as an audience member so most of the time I find myself burning through the pages when I read scripts. I must say, the governor’s whole tirade in the mid-season 4 finale was pretty crazy.

There are still a couple of characters that we don’t know much about, who’s storyline would you like to learn more about?
I would’ve loved to know more about Andrea’s sister Amy. She died so early to stay true to the comic, but it would’ve been interesting to learn more about her story. Of course I strongly relate to Andrea and Amy’s sibling dynamic.

The group reunited in the finale. Do you think they will stay together for long? Do you think it’s better for them to split up or stay together?
I think staying together is always the best choice!

Rick stands out as the leader of the group. Do you think at times his decisions hurt the group?
Rick is such a great leader because he understands sacrifice. But Rick was grieving during Season 3 after Lori died and unfortunately I think he lost sight of the best interests of the group when he sent Sasha, Tyreese, Ben and Allen away from the prison.

What can you tell us about Sasha’s involvement in terminus throughout this season?
I can’t tell you that…you gotta stay tuned!

What can you tell us about the premiere?
It’s explosive, gut wrenching and emotionally riveting. It’s definitely gonna take you by storm, it’s a wild ride indeed.

You can watch Sonequa Martin-Green tonight at 9:00PM on AMC.
