GOTHAM Star Ben McKenzie Reveals When We’ll See Batman

GOTHAM’s season 2 promotional campaign has focused heavily on the villains rather than the protagonists, specifically Bruce Wayne, but now Ben McKenzie has offered his take on when the series exactly should introduce a full-grown Batman.

At a Wizard World convention in Chicago this weekend, McKenzie spoke up about the series’ plans to reserve Batman until the last possible moment of the series:

“The last frame of the last shot of the last scene of the last, uh, episode of Gotham, whatever season that may be, is Bruce putting on the cape. But it [Gotham] is everything leading up to that.”

TVInsider has debuted the second official photo of the new season, in which Alfred and Bruce enter into the mysterious cavern that was discovered last season. However, series star David Mazouz advises viewers against thinking of the cavern as a “Batcave,” at least yet.

“It changes everything in Bruce’s life. It changes how he sees Alfred, the criminal side of Gotham, even how he sees his parents. It’s definitely not the Batcave. What is down there are clues to Thomas Wayne’s secret life and what he was trying to do before being killed.”

The second season will make series regulars of Drew Powell‘s Butch Gilzean, Chris Chalk‘s Lucius Fox, Nicholas D’Agosto‘s Harvey Dent, and Morena Baccarin‘s Dr. Leslie Thompkins. Producers will also incorporate such villains as Clayface, the Mad Hatter, Mr. Freeze, Hugo Strange, Tommy Elliot, and possibly even the Court of Owls, while early episodes will serve as a “pre-embryonic” origin story for the Joker.

In addition to Natalie Alyn Lynd‘s Silver Cloud and James Frain’s Theo Galavan, Gotham season 2 will also feature Michael Chiklis as Captain Nathaniel Barnes, and Jessica Lucas as Galavan’s sister (and future Tigress), Tabitha.

GOTHAM season 2 premieres Sept. 21st at 8PM on FOX.
