THE VAMPIRE DIARIES Sneak Peek: Dare To Evolve

In a rare moment of self-evaluation last week, Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerholder) decided that he was “a selfish friend, a jealous brother and a horrible son.”

His selfishness drove him to ask his best friend, Bonnie (Kat Graham) to resurrect the Heretic, Oscar (Tim Kang), using the Phoenix Stone even though the artifact has terrifying implications…all so he could trade Oscar for Elena’s coffin.

Damon’s jealousy toward his brother, Stefan (Paul Wesley), only grows now that Stefan and Caroline (Candice King) have become closer since the vervain spell has been removed.  Why should Stefan have a happily-ever-after when he has lost Elena for a lifetime.

His mother, Lily (guest star Annie Wersching), prefers her ad hoc family to Damon, which he concedes is because he is a horrible son. (Well, maybe Lily is not exactly “mother of the year” material, either.)

So where will this bout of self-realization lead the elder Salvatore brother?

Possibly he will become a better boyfriend.  In an unexpected move, he turned to Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino in surprise cameo last week) to spirit Elena’s body to Los Angeles rather than selfishly hanging onto the coffin somewhere close to his mother’s treacherous reach.

Damon may become a better friend.  He warned Matt (Zach Roerig) to stay away from the Heretics to keep the deputy safe.  Even Lily was surprised at Damon’s move to become a protector.

Whatever Damon’s choices, he certainly is not the only Mystic Falls resident in transition.

Take Enzo (Michael Malarkey), for instance.  Saving Matt from certain annihilation by Valerie (guest star Elizabeth Blackmore) was almost as strange to see as Damon’s veiled concern for the token human.  Enzo and Bonnie (Kat Graham) become uneasy allies to stop impending danger, but they find themselves at odds.

Bonnie continues to strengthen her powers to the point where Damon says that she is “officially the scariest person” that he knows.  Not only is she meeting with a Heretic, Bonnie is helping Alaric (Matt Davis) bring Jo back from the dead with the Phoenix Stone.  Distressing aspects come to light that force her to warn Alaric about possible ramifications of their actions.

Will what she learns change the sweet “Three Years From Now” scene with Alaric performing surgery on his twins’ doll?  It was a scene of domestic bliss, well, until Damon showed up at the door.

Domestic bliss does not seem to be in Enzo’s future, however, as it appears that Julian (guest star Todd Lasance) may derail the Augustine Vampire’s plan for happiness with Lily. Valerie fears Julian’s return as he kept her from Stefan back in 1863.

Perhaps the person with the most on the line tonight is Caroline.  The blonde beauty insists that Stefan meet up with Valerie to see if there is any residual chemistry between the defunct couple after 150 years.  While there may be no fire, there may be an explosion when Stefan finds out that Valerie was pregnant with his child in 1863.  Will that bond bring love back to the ill-fated pair, or will Steroline remain strong?

This week’s episode of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES was written by producer Rebecca Sonnenshine and directed by Kellie Cyrus.
