We open tonight’s second episode of THE X-FILES with a desperate man looking for a way out of the torment only he can hear. While everyone seems quick to rule his death a suicide, Mulder and Scully think something else might be going on.
The pair investigate whatever unseen force may have driven him to do it. After visiting the victim’s apartment, they’re eventually led to a lab where extreme genetic experimentation has been going on unchecked for decades. These subjects all possess dangerous powers and are, understandably, resentful towards the people responsible for their plight.
Mulder is also stricken by the mysterious auditory problem that drove the victim to suicide — leaving Scully to figure out the solution quickly.
