SUPERGIRL Sneak Peeks: Talkin’ ‘Bout Degeneration

Like Frankenstein’s Monster, Bizarro (the character on which Superman’s defective clone is based), has gone through many incarnations in DC Comics.  Tonight, Bizarro gets another transformation, as the faulty copy of SUPERGIRL.

In most versions of Bizarro, this somewhat dim/inadequately-formed monster is an experiment-gone-wrong created by resident bad guys like Lex Luthor or General Zod.  Tonight’s version is a SUPERGIRL knockoff developed by entrepreneur, Maxwell Lord (Peter Facinelli).

In the comics, just like Frankenstein’s Monster in films and the book, people developed an affinity for the disfigured, childlike Bizzaro, to the point where writers eventually made him a superhero and gave him a girlfriend.

Bizarro’s faulty design generally causes the creation to perceive “wrong” as “right” either not understanding what it takes to be a supervillain, or by being so mentally underdeveloped that it grasps the world slowly, using “Me Tarzan, you Jane” speaking patterns.

What Bizarro learns quickly, however, is that people are cruel to those who look different and that his own heart is capable, both of kindness and of being broken.

It will be interesting to see what path “Bizarro SUPERGIRL” takes tonight in the extremely capable hands of fabulous director/fan favorite, John Showalter, who helmed the episode.

Also interesting will be the makeup techniques endured by series star, Melissa Benoist, and guest star, Hope Lauren, who will be playing Bizarro as the character deteriorates.  For those unfamiliar with the character, the Superman version of Bizarro tends to look like this in print and action figures…

Looks like hours in a makeup chair and a lot of discomfort from here.

Returning tonight is Blake Jenner, Benoist’s real-life husband, playing Adam Foster, elder son of Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart).  Kara gets unsolicited dating advice from James (Mehcad Brooks) and Winn (Jeremy Jordan) about dating the boss’s son.

SUPERGIRL also stars Chyler Leigh, David Harewood and Jenna Dewan-Tatum.  Other guest stars on tonight’s episode, “Bizarro,” are Michael Albala, Carly Nykanen, Nick Jaine and Kent Shocknek, which was written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Rachel Shukert.

SUPERGIRL airs at a slightly delayed time tonight of 8:02 p.m. ET/PT on CBS (U.S.) and Global TV (Canada).
