THE CATCH: Playing Cat and Mouse in Shondaland’s Newest Series

There’s not a lot of mystery in Shondaland’s THE CATCH, so you won’t be getting HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER. And there is definitely a strong female lead (two of them, actually) just like in SCANDAL, but she gets played a little bit too much in the premiere episode to be like Olivia Pope.

In fact, put away what you know about Shondaland shows, because THE CATCH is its own type of show. It’s very glossy and slick and more like OCEAN’S 11 than SCANDAL. And there’s not a lot of surprise because the big mystery is basically revealed in the first act.

Mireille Enos stars as Alice Vaughan, a top L.A. private investigator who likes being in the field and kicking a little ass (very literally in the first few moments of the episode). She is the co-owner of Anderson/Vaughan Investigations, a business she built from the ground up with her best friend and business partner, Valerie Anderson. She’s also engaged to Christopher Hall (not his real name), played by Peter Krause. It turns out that Hall (actually named Benjamin Jones) is a con man who set out to steal her money and is actually working with two partners of his own: Sonya Walger as Margot Bishop and Alimi Ballard as Reginald Lennox.

When Alice realizes she’s been played she sets out to track down her former fiancé. But he’s also struggling a little bit because it’s possible the con man fell victim to love.

THE CATCH premieres tonight (March 24) at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
