OUTLANDER: Catch Up on Season 1 Before Season 2 Begins

OUTLANDER returns this coming weekend with a move to beautiful Paris (watch a featurette about the new setting). But before we look ahead to season 2 of the show, let’s look back and refresh your memory about what happened in season 1.

The video below will hit all of the major plot points for you, but here’s a summary to jog your memory:

On a vacation to Scotland with her husband (Frank) in 1945, Claire Randall headed to the stones at Craigh na Dun and fell through time. Specifically, she landed in the same spot in 1743. Back in 1945, her husband was frantically trying to locate her, but the police and many others seemed convinced that she had left of her own accord.

In the past, Claire found herself in the middle of a skirmish between British Redcoats and rebel Scottish Highlanders. Redcoat Captain Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall (her husband’s brutal ancestor), took an interest in her right away, but the Scots spirited her off to Castle Leoch. As a healer, she was able to help nurse injured Scotsman Jamie Fraser back to health and then became a virtual prisoner of Clan MacKenzie and could not return to the stones and her own time.

As she and Jamie grew closer (and she found more allies among Clan MacKenzie), she learned that they were collecting funds for the Jacobite army, which would eventually lead to their deaths at the Battle of Culloden . She also married Jamie in order to protect herself from Black Jack Randall.

After a brutal attack against Claire by Black Jack and a witch trial with her friend Geillis Duncan, Claire told Jamie the truth of her time travel and opted to stay with him in the past rather than return to her husband in the future. Claire and Jamie traveled to his ancestral home, but Jamie was eventually captured by the Redcoats. In order to save Claire, he submitted to Black Jack’s rape of him. Eventually he was rescued by Claire and his clansmen, but he was emotionally and physically broken.

After Claire broke through his barriers, she and Jamie set sail for France with the promise of a family in their future (because she’s pregnant) and a mission to stop the Battle of Culloden before it began.
