Last week’s episode, “Myriad,” was the buildup for tonight’s season finale of SUPERGIRL, titled “Better Angels.”
The title of the episode, is a phrase used in Abraham Lincoln’s inaugural address, as well as other works. In his speech, Lincoln appeals to the citizens of a country prepping for civil war to be guided by the “better angels of our nature.” He urged opponents to try to live in harmony, saying “We must not be enemies.”
In SUPERGIRL’s season finale, will the Earthlings and Kryptonians find peaceful coexistence or will one side destroy the other?
Most of the season’s recurring cast appears in the episode which makes the likelihood of a blockbuster feel even more promising.
With Non (guest star Chris Vance) controlling most of National City’s citizens with Myriad, several questions come to mind about what to expect in the finale.
1. When Krypton was in danger of destruction from resource depletion, the politicians could not settle on a solution. Astra (Laura Benanti) implemented the mind-controlling Myriad to force Argo City’s citizens to obey her will. Does Myriad have geographic limits, or as Maxwell Lord (Peter Facinelli) feared, will aliens be ruling the entire Earth?
2. Fearing a takeover, Max developed a Kryptonite bomb which could wipe out the alien invaders. SUPERGIRL considered the threat plausible enough that the loss of 300,000 human casualties seemed acceptable until Cat (Calista Flockhart) urged her to find another way. Does her advice that “hope is stronger than fear” result in the salvation of National City? (Check out the sneak peek clip below.)
3. If Max, Cat and SUPERGIRL are going to use CatCo’s old analog broadcast television equipment to ride on the Myriad digital signal, how does that work? (Seriously, someone log into the comments and explain that to me in non-tech lingo.)
4. Since Cat refused to date Harrison Ford (inside joke last week), will she a Max become a new item? What would be their uni-name? MaxCat sounds like kitty litter, and CatWell sounds like a veterinary hospital.
5. Also on the relationship front, will James (Mehcad Brooks) remember the kiss that Kara planted on him right before his mind was abducted by Myriad?
6. Will that kiss get in the way of the budding womance (female bromance) between Lucy (Jenna Dewan-Tatum) and Kara, especially since Lucy shot SUPERGIRL with Kryptonite, but SUPERGIRL still saved her life? Even General Lane (Glenn Morshower) is on Team Supergirl against the Kryptonians. If James and Kara become an item, is a Winn (Jeremy Jordan)/Lucy liaison in the cards for Season 2?
7. On the subject of jealousy, with Astra dead and Indigo (SMALLVILLE’s Supergirl, Laura Vandervoort) becoming Non’s new squeeze, will her jealousy of SUPERGIRL (Melissa Benoist) push Kara’s uncle to destroy his niece, rather than negotiate coexistence? Indigo obviously does not listen to her “better angels” if she has any.
8. When Indigo thought she had killed J’onn J’onnz (David Harewood), how did he fake his death, managing to fool the power of Myriad? (Spoiler alert: He was in the promo attached to last week’s episode.)
9. When J’onn no longer could protect Alex (Chyler Leigh) telepathically from Myriad, she donned her alien-fighting armor and attacked SUPERGIRL with the Kryptonite sword she had used to slay Astra. How did Eliza (Helen Slater) get to the battle site in time to stop her daughters from destroying each other?
10. Will anyone tell Eliza that Jeremiah (Dean Cain) is alive before the end of Season 1?
11. There is a lot of hugging and what seem to be fond farewells in the finale, since what appears to be the end of the world seems nigh. When Cat hugged SUPERGIRL last week, did nothing remind her of Kara?
12. Since SUPERGIRL has not yet been renewed for Season 2, will producers choose to end the evening with a cliffhanger? If the show does get a pickup, there is a deal in the works for former TV WONDER WOMAN, Lynda Carter, to make at least one appearance next year as the President of the United States.
13. The story for the finale episode was written by Executive Producers Andrew Kreisberg and Ali Adler (with the teleplay by Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller). Given that SUPERGIRL’s producers also helm THE FLASH, ARROW and DC’S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW, will they make the choice to kill off a main character as they have with their other shows? If so, who will get the axe?
