THE FLASH Recap: The One Without Speed

Last night’s THE FLASH left me feeling confused.

“Back to Normal” showed us how Barry is living his life without his speed force, now that Zoom took it from him. So he doesn’t have his powers, Caitlin has been taken by Evil!Jay and he just doesn’t know what to do anymore. And then, to make things even worse, Harry was kidnapped as well, by a metahuman who thought he was the Harrison Wells from this Earth.

It was just not a good day for our not-so-powerful-anymore speedster. Harry was determined to go and find Jesse, now that Barry is not the Flash anymore. So he finds her, he confronts her and she tells him she is just as scared of him as she is of Zoom, because he is capable of killing people to protect her, and she can’t accept that. Harry leaves and, on his way back to Star Labs, he is kidnapped by a metahuman with super strength. The problem is, with his super strength comes super aging as well, so he is an 18-year-old high school kid who looks like he is in his 50s already.

He thinks Harry is the Harrison Wells from this Earth and demands that he finds a cure. Team Flash immediately notices Harry has been taken, so they contact Jesse and, with her super intelligence, they manage to find out exactly who the guy is and where he has taken Harry. It takes a couple of tries, but the team saves Harry, and he and Jesse make up, so she’s back on the team – which is pretty great because she adds so much to the show.

Meanwhile, in Earth-2, Jay tells Caitlin he loves her and that, with time, she will start to love him back. When he leaves, Caitlin sees that her doppelganger, Killer Frost, is in one of the cages. So they work together to open it, so they can leave Zoom’s lair together, but – as any other villain, Killer Frost double crosses her and tries to kill her. Jay intervenes and kills her with her own piece of ice, so that was tragically ironic. This was probably my favorite part of the episode and – although I like Danielle Panabaker’s performance as Caitlin Snow – she is just absolutely fantastic as Killer Frost. It’s such a shame that Jay killed her, because I really wanted to see more of her sarcastic one-liners.

And finally, what is up with this show trying to shove a possible Iris/Barry romance down our throats? Haven’t we established already that they’re better off as siblings/friends/whatever? I thought Iris was supposed to have a new love interest, wasn’t she? Her new editor? What about Patty? I’m not sure Barry is over her or even aware that Iris is looking at him in a different light, so please, let’s just stop this nonsense while we’re still ahead.

Anyway, even though he managed to defeat the metahuman and save Harry, Barry is still pretty depressed about the whole not having his powers anymore thing. He has no way to cross between universes without his speed, so there is still no hope for Caitlin. What he doesn’t know, however, is that Evil!Jay decided to conquer this Earth, so he is bringing Caitlin back.

But Harry won’t let him mope around and says he will help him, because he needs to atone for his sins. And that’s where I got confused. He says that the only way he will be able to help Barry get his speed back is to create another particle accelerator explosion and that that will help him atone for his sins. I mean, what?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but how does one atone for one’s sins by committing another sin? Sure, it will help Barry, but he’s got to know that there will be consequences and those can be catastrophic.

A new episode of THE FLASH airs on May 3 at 8/7c on The CW.
