PERSON OF INTEREST Preview: Triple at Bats

Last week’s PERSON OF INTEREST started with a stunner on Monday.

That was unexpected. We were expecting Shaw to reappear. And we were expecting her to escape from her Samaritan captors. But we weren’t expecting her to have a steamy bed scene with Root. Nor were we expecting her to shoot John Greer or John Reese or herself. And we weren’t expecting the entire episode to be a virtual reality (VR) scene played out in Shaw’s mind by John Greer to manipulate her into revealing the hideout of The Machine and its agents. What a devil Greer was, then, to tell his staff to begin VR scenario number 6,742 (as in there were 6,471 before it), putting Shaw through one more torturous, mind-frying episode in her head. “We have all the time in the world, my dear,” he said cynically.

It seemed almost like the good old days with Tuesday’s PERSON OF INTEREST as Reese took on the assignment of protecting an NYPD analyst investigating a software glitch tied into a missing person. And Fusco was being held in the dark about team activities as in the days of old, but he had finally gotten his fill of it and decided to take action on is own, looking into missing persons. And when Reese came up missing, Fusco went looking after him on his own. It turned out Reese had been nabbed by an old friend of Elias, the former amiable mob boss, who wanted to exact revenge for Elias’ murder. When the old friend wouldn’t take no for an answer, Reese took him to another safe house to see Elias, who was actually still alive and living in the shadows. Elias advised his old friend to stay in the shadows, but his friend wanted revenge against this mysterious new force that has quieted down the streets. Meanwhile, Finch had created a strategy game session between The Machine and Samaritan on two isolated computers to see what the team is up against in the real world, and after more than 10 billion scenarios, The Machine had lost every one, not a very hopeful sign.

So leading into this week, when we get three new episodes (one on Monday and two back-to-back episodes on Tuesday – someone in a hurry to get this thing over with? Not me!), Shaw is still with Samaritan, The Machine is now handing out assignments but the team is holding Fusco at arm’s length and he’s tired of it, kind of going rogue investigating missing persons in a way that’s likely to get him unwanted notice by Samaritan, The Machine doesn’t appear to be up to a match against Samaritan, and Elias’ friend is now loose to seek revenge on Samaritan, too.
