PERSON OF INTEREST Series Finale Preview: The Final Fade to Black

It’s time to say goodbye. Tonight’s PERSON OF INTEREST is the series finale.

Last week was a mishmash of flashbacks as The Machine presented scenarios to Finch of the world without his work. This played out kind of like a mind game between Finch and The Machine. But The Machine wasn’t morose or begging for its life. It was more like a chess game with The Machine setting Finch up for the final play, one in which The Machine already knew the outcome.

Well, Finch did it. The unthinkable. He uploaded a virus that could kill not only Samaritan but also The Machine.  Samaritan’s John Greer gambled that Finch wouldn’t go through with it and when it came time to voice activate the virus, Greer sequestered Finch and himself in a sound-proof room until he deduced that Finch hadn’t trusted The Machine with the password, then had the air sucked out of the room. That killed Greer, but The Machine saved Finch and ultimately sacrificed itself to save the world. When Reese and Shaw came to his aid, Finch insisted they save themselves, leaving through an escape that he and The Machine had set up. Finch then activated the virus and we saw Samaritan blink and wiggle and fade. Stay tuned to next week to see if it worked.

Detective Fusco, for his part, fended off a federal agent who turned out to also work for Samaritan and who was responsible for killing the missing persons that Fusco had been investigating and found in the abandoned tunnel. Fusco turned the tables on the agent and could have killed him, but the once tainted-detective-turned-good-guy chose the more ethical path.

And that brings us to tonight’s finale. CBS’s press release is a bit murky on details, but suffice it to say, Finch, Reese, Shaw, and Fusco will get one more “suicide mission” to do in Samaritan and save The Machine and the world. Returning to the precinct to get help finding Finch, Reese and Fusco run into a bit of resistance, as you will see in our video clip.

It’s been a wild ride and a far cry from being an unrealistic look at government surveillance and how people given power perceive their role in steering society. I wish PERSON OF INTEREST weren’t ending, but that’s out of my control. What is in my control is saying how much I enjoyed the story lines and the writing and the characters played by such fine actors. Let’s hope this final episode does the series justice before the final fade to black.

Watch a clip below and tune in to the series finale of PERSON OF INTEREST tonight (June 21) at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on CBS (U.S.) and CTV (Canada).
