SUPERNATURAL Season 11 is Out on Blu-ray and DVD Today

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the DVD I reviewed in this blog post. The opinions I share are my own.

The eleventh season of SUPERNATURAL has landed on DVD, Blu-ray and digital release today (September 6). The show now stands as The CW’s longest-running scripted series and season 11 of SUPERNATURAL saw the show going back to its roots: its biblical roots, to be exact. The actions of Sam and Dean Winchester at the end of season 10 inadvertently released a villain known as The Darkness. As it turns out, The Darkness also goes by another name: Amara (a.k.a. God’s sister). As the yin to his yang, he locked away before her destructive nature could wipe out his creations.

The Winchester brothers were once again pitted between ancient good and evil forces in season 11, much as they were in season 5 when the apocalypse came calling. This time Dean was pulled towards the “darkness” side of the fight, as his connection to Amara via the Mark of Cain meant that he felt drawn towards her once she manifested herself as a human (albeit with incredible powers) and vice versa. Meanwhile, Lucifer (who had been locked away thanks to Sam’s sacrifice at the end of season 5) took the reappearance of his “aunt” as a chance to escape Hell. And, thanks to Castiel, he inhabited the other angel’s body, escaped his cage and was roaming the earth once again, humiliating and dethroning Crowley as the King of Hell (a fact Crowley definitely wasn’t happy about).

In the end, Dean was prepared to sacrifice himself in order to destroy Amara. But the reappearance of God (a.k.a. Chuck) meant that He and His sister could work out some long-festering sibling issues and went off together in order to heal. Whether these two ancient beings will ever return to SUPERNATURAL in the future is anyone’s guess, but since no one ever really disappears on this show we’re assuming they’ll pop up again before the series ends.

The end of season 11 introduced two new arcs for season 12, including the British Men of Letters. This group — formerly associated with the Men of Letters that Sam and Dean’s grandfather belonged to — isn’t too happy that the Winchester brothers have been wreaking havoc in the U.S. over the years and nearly ended the world a bunch of times. And one of them — Lady Toni Bevell — came to collect the brothers and get them in line. But all she found was Sam, who believed that his brother was dead. After shooting him off-screen, it looks like the younger Winchester brother is in serious danger and is without his brother or his familiar allies. Finally, Amara gifted Dean with a monumental present as thanks for reuniting her and her brother: the return of his mother, Mary. After being dead for three decades, Mary Winchester is back and she will have to get used to life in the 21st century and get to know the two grown men who were just young children when she died all the way back in the pilot.

The DVD and Blu-ray sets of SUPERNATURAL contain a wealth of special features that will be sure to delight SUPERNATURAL fans — particularly those who are interested in the behind the scenes details.
