NBC aired a live version of HAIRSPRAY tonight, starring Harvey Fierstein, Jennifer Hudson, Ariana Grande, Kristin Chenoweth, Martin Short, Derek Hough, Dove Cameron, Garrett Clayton, Shahadi Wright Joseph, Ephraim Sykes, and newcomer Maddie Baillio as Tracy Turnblad. The musical takes place in 1962 Baltimore. where plump teenager Tracy’s dream is to dance on “The Corny Collins Show,” a local TV program. Even with all of the odds stacked against her, Tracy wins a role on the show and helps to integrate the all-white cast.
