A middle school-aged Holden Matthews is headed out to meet his friend Kevin and watch a meteor shower when BEYOND begins. Soon a fight with some older boys leads to a chase and Holden crashing in the woods. And something strange happens there before a white light causes Holden to black out and then fall into a coma.
Twelve years later he wakes up in the hospital and his parents (Tom and Diane) are overjoyed to really see him again. But he’s shocked to learn he’s been out so long and the doctors are baffled at how healthy his body is after his long coma. His family is also being inundated with phone calls from the press after his miraculous recovery.
It’s not long after that Holden starts having strange dreams of a mysterious man reaching for him and a woman’s voice saying “see you soon”. And each morning he’s waking up in the woods where he was injured all those years ago without any knowledge of how he got there.
Soon after his doctor’s office at the hospital is being broken into and a young woman Holden meets (Willa) at a department store warns him that he’s in danger and he should trust no one. His strange new abilities become terrifyingly clear when he goes for an MRI, sees that strange dream man again (who is telling not not to “hold back”), and then seems to fritz the MRI machine and cause a fire in the lab.
Something is clearly happening to — and around — Holden. A mysterious voice on the phone is making plans for Holden and not everyone in his life can be trusted. When a man attacks Holden claiming he knows about his powers, Holden is faced with the prospect of uncovering what happened to him.
In the second hour of the premiere, Holden tries to forget about his recent bizarre encounters and lead a “normal” life. His brother Luke tries to help Holden acclimate to his new surroundings and brings him along to a college party. Holden hits it off with a friendly co-ed, but strange memories of Willa lead to disastrous consequences. Meanwhile, Diane and Tom try to bond with Holden as an adult.
The two-hour series premiere of BEYOND airs on Monday, January 2 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on Freeform. All ten episodes of BEYOND will be available via digital platforms, including the Freeform App, Freeform.com, On Demand and Hulu, simultaneous with the premiere.
