SUPERGIRL Sneak Peek: Shape Of Things To Come

Relationships are hard. Sometimes the line between what “is” and what “isn’t” is a moving target. SUPERGIRL certainly has shown that even a superhero can suffer from a broken heart.

In tonight’s episode, “The Martian Chronicles,” it is obvious that other strangers from another planet also are mired in the thrill and disillusion that often come with relationships.

Green Martian, J’onn (David Harewood), having helped White Martian, M’gann (guest star Sharon Leal, DREAMGIRLS), back to health, may be in danger. White Martians can shapeshift, and that includes new arrival, Armek (guest star Terrell Tilford, SERENITY), a White Martian.

Despite the ill will between the green and white races, J’onn and M’gann have bonded. Psychically, he has seen that she sacrificed her own safety to save his fellow Green Martians when they were attacked by her whites.

When Armek arrives in National City intent on taking M’gann back to Mars to face her punishment as a traitor, he shapeshifts to look like her to gain information and hunt her down. When J’onn discovers Armek’s plan, SUPERGIRL and her friends are trapped in the DEO with the alien bounty hunter.

Will J’onn and M’gann have a chance to overcome the history of conflict between their two races and have a successful relationship, or will Armek snatch his fellow WM and return her to Mars to face her punishment for betraying her own kind.

J’onn is not the only alien navigating the waters of strained relations. Last week, Mon-El (Chris Wood) told Kara that he had strong feelings for her. With ex-flame, James (Mehcad Brooks), now disclosed as “Guardian,” and Winn (Jeremy Jordan) ex-Kara-crusher, as Guardian’s crimefighting partner, Supergirl’s relationships have been through some drastic changes with more on the way.

But, the dynamic that has been Kara’s most consistent was the sister-bond that she shares with Alex (Chyler Leigh). But that, too, is being upended when Alex decides to forego Kara’s birthday tradition for an evening with her new girlfriend, Maggie (Floriana Lima).

Love and hate. Success and disappointment. Bigotry and acceptance. Happiness and sorrow. “One plus one” does not always make “two” without a lot of work, even for those who can leap tall buildings in a single bound.

“The Martian Chronicles” was written Gabriel Llanas & Anna Musky-Goldwyn and directed by David McWhirter. The rest of tonight’s guest stars have some equally fun credits: Andrea Brooks, BATES MOTEL, Robert Zen Humpage, PUSH, Curtis Lum, PRISON BREAK: SEQUEL, and Briana Venskus, THE WALKING DEAD.

SUPERGIRL airs tonight (February 6) at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW (U.S.) and on Showcase (Canada).
