Oh, the humanity! In the ultimate karmic backlash, Stephan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) has regained what was lost…his humanity.

There have been many times in the past 170+ years that the perpetual teenager has wanted to be human again. When he fell in love with Elena (Nina Dobrev), he yearned for a way that the two of them could share a future.

Now, through irony’s cruel joke, at a time that he had been embracing his bad boy self and ripping his way across the countryside, Bonnie (Kat Graham) has injected him with Elena’s blood to protect herself from Stephan’s murderous hand…rendering him human.

But not before he shattered Bonnie’s happiness. As Enzo (Michael Malarkey) stood at the door, Stephan ripped his fellow vampire’s heart from his chest, literally, and ripped Bonnie’s from hers, figuratively.

As his humanity floods through his veins, so do memories of the dozens of murders he committed over the past century-and-a-half. He flees to escape his feelings and the pain that he has caused Bonnie, Caroline (Candice King), and so many others in his turbulent life.

Damon (Ian Somerhalder) engineers a deal with Cade (guest star Wolé Parks) to retrieve the Maxwell journal in exchange for Stefan’s soul, but gets pushback from Alaric (Matt Davis) and Matt (Zach Roerig) who refuse to hand over the journal. The diary may contain the key to destroying the devil.

Guest stars on tonight’s episode, “What Are You,” are Alicia Beshears, Jimmy Dempster, Martin Feigen, Kristen Gutoskie, Todd James Jackson, Nathalie Kelley, Lily Rose Mumford, Tierney Mumford, Reece, Jaz Sinclair, Persia White, Kurt Yue and Emelita T. Gonzalez.

“What Are You” was written by Chad Fiveash & James Stoteraux and directed by Darren Genet.

Check out the sneak peek below, along with a music video featuring recent behind-the-scenes footage, and some thoughts from Executive Producer, Julie Plec, as THE VAMPIRE DIARIES airs the last 5 episodes of its eight-year run.

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES airs tonight at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
