Boy prostitutes are being gruesomely killed in New York City when THE ALIENIST begins. Newly appointed police commissioner Theodore Roosevelt (Geraghty) decides to call upon criminal psychologist (also known as an “alienist”) Dr. Laszlo Kreizler (Brühl) and newspaper illustrator John Moore (Evans) to conduct the investigation in secret. Headstrong secretary Sara Howard (Fanning), who is determined to become the city’s first female police detective, joins the pair in their search for the killer. Together the trio utilize psychology and forensic investigation techniques (both relatively new fields at the time) to catch one of New York City’s first serial killers.
