Fox has revived two of its old shows – PRISON BREAK and THE X-FILES – via event series revivals. THE X-FILES aired two additional seasons after going off the air in 2002, while PRISON BREAK has aired one additional season after going off the air less than a decade ago.
But what’s the future of both shows? Today during a conference call with the CEOs and other leaders of Fox the future of these franchises were discussed.
There’s hope for another season of PRISON BREAK at this time. According to the network, another event season is in the early stages of development and the network is focused on “getting the next iteration right”. They are currently working with Paul Scheuring and the producers now, but fans shouldn’t expect any significant announcements for several months. Still, the future for PRISON BREAK is very promising. Fox made the announcement while discussing its 2018-2019 primetime schedule.
Less promising at this time is the future of THE X-FILES. Star Gillian Anderson has made it clear that she seems to have retired the role of Dana Scully and the network said “we’re really pleased with how THE X-FILES did this past season. It’s been a great show for our network, but there’s no plans to do another season at the moment.” Whether there is a chance to do an Anderson-less season in the future is anyone’s guess at this time.

There’s also discussion going on about developing within the 24 franchise. According to Dana Walden, Chairman and CEO, “Howard Gordon is working with a team of writers. He’s actually working with Bob Cochran and Joel Surnow, the original creators on one idea that we’re pretty excited about. It’s premature, it’s too early to announce it, but they’ve been working and ideating around where the show wants to live next.”

Finally, the fate of both GHOSTED and L.A. TO VEGAS are still up in the air. Fox hasn’t made a decision yet on the future of both shows. There are still more episodes of GHOSTED that are scheduled to run beginning in July and the network is going to see how they perform before making a determination. The network is also trying to make a decision about the future of L.A. TO VEGAS and seeing if they have a place on the schedule for it to grow. In other words, stay tuned because it doesn’t seem like a decision has been made in both cases yet.
