THE RESIDENT: Catch Up on The Characters Before Season 2 Begins

Annette Brown/FOX

Are you eagerly awaiting the season 2 premiere of THE RESIDENT? If you are, Fox has helpfully put together some recaps of what the show’s main characters went through in season 1 so you can remind yourself what happened in case you forgot over those long summer months.

Dr. Randolph Bell. Dr. Bell began THE RESIDENT with a medical condition that seriously impacted his ability to remain a successful surgeon. After a series of medical mishaps in the OR, he did everything he could to save his career and continue his position at the hospital. When the former hospital CEO installed video cameras in the OR to catch future mistakes, he manipulated the hospital board into firing her and hiring him as the new CEO. He was also involved in a romantic relationship with Dr. Hunter and the two had conspired to get him his new job. When Dr. Conrad, Nic and Dr. Pravesh warned him that she was purposely mis-diagnosing healthy patients in order to commit insurance fraud, one could have assumed he would side with his partner-in-crime. But he did the right thing and turned Dr. Hunter in to the authorities.

Dr. Conrad. Conrad became jealous when his on-again/off-again girlfriend Nic, a nurse, seemed interested in another doctor. His father, with whom he clearly didn’t have a good relationship, also re-entered his life at this time. And he was deeply invested in the care of Lily, a young woman being treated by Dr. Hunter. Hunter was Conrad’s former mentor, but Lily’s death convinced him that she was engaging in shady practices that were leading to patient deaths. When Nic got arrested while trying to investigate Hunter, Conrad turned to his hated father, who has plans for his son’s future.

Conrad vs. Bell. These two men were extremely antagonistic throughout the season. While it took Conrad a long time to realize what was going on with Dr. Hunter, it was clear he was suspicious of Dr. Bell from the beginning. But Bell wasn’t going to let a resident stop him from remaining the Chief of Surgery at the hospital, even if he was a health risk to patients.

Nurse Nic Nevin. Nic was one of the first people who was suspicious of Dr. Hunter and she began investigating her in earnest early in season 1. This became particularly problematic when Dr. Hunter framed Nic for Lily’s death because she wanted to prevent the nurse from discovering her secrets.  Fired and arrested thanks to Hunter, she was eventually reinstated when Hunter was brought down.

Dr. Devon Pravesh. Pravesh began his first day as a medical resident when the series began. Conrad served as his mentor and helped him became a great doctor, even if his methods were unorthodox. He was also enamored with Dr. Hunter originally, but he sided with Nic when he realized she was endangering her patients’ lives.

Dr. Mina Okafor. Mina is a superb surgeon, but her bed-side manner left something to be desired. Still, after saving the life of a patient she had feelings for, it seemed like she turned over a new personal and professional leaf.

Dr. AJ Austin. AJ joined the team late in the first season. Like Mina, he is a superb season but he is a bit prickly. But he immediately saw Mina’s potential and wanted her to serve as his right hand.

In a preview for season 2 we see a continued struggle between the doctors and nurses, who just want to help people, and the hospital administration who are worried about making money for the hospital. Conrad and Nic also seem to be going strong as the second season begins. Jenna Dewan is also joining the cast for season 2.

THE RESIDENT returns for its second season on Monday, September 24 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.
