SUPERGIRL: Nicole Maines and Melissa Benoist Tease Nia’s Developing Powers

In the last episode of SUPERGIRL we saw a hint that Nia Nal will soon become Dreamer, National City’s newest superhero. After getting caught randomly napping at work, Nia told Kara that she suffered from narcolepsy and then got caught up in a series of lies in order to hide the truth from her colleague and friend. The powers that Nia develops are a new thing for the show, star Melissa Benoist (Kara Danvers) said during a recent visit to the SUPERGIRL set in Vancouver. “It’s a super power that we haven’t really explored on this show yet. I think the writers especially are having a lot of fun coming up with what her abilities entail and the rules of that. That’s really cool to see unfold.”

But how do these powers actually develop? “For Nia, it starts out with just dreaming and falling asleep at work. But as they kind of develop, we start to see more quick manifestations and more instantaneous stuff. And they go into that further in the next few episodes,” Nicole Maines (Nia Nal) hinted.

As this story develops, Maines said that “after [the last] episode you kind of see her get caught up in her lie and really have to explain what’s going on. Her powers and her narcolepsy is another thing that Kara is really a mentor for her for. And so she helps her through that and helps her try to come to terms in a way with her powers. I know they just announced the casting of Nia’s family and so we’re going to see more of Nia’s origin story – where her powers come from, the lineage behind that.”

SUPERGIRL airs Sundays at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
