Archie Andrews is finally free from prison on RIVERDALE. After pleading guilty to charges set up by his girlfriend’s father, Veronica, Betty and his friends organized his escape from juvie and now the former jailbird is holed up in a bunker and trying to recover from the warden’s attempt to kill him. In the next episode of RIVERDALE we’ll see more about the consequences of Archie’s escape, particularly for Hiram and Veronica.
- How Did Prison Change Archie? According to KJ App (Archie Andrews), prison “made [Archie] a lot stronger, a lot harder. He’s definitely a better fighter now. So, if anyone tries to mess with me, I hope I can just drop them straight away. I think it kind of desensitized him, in a way. I feel there may be a little bit of post-traumatic stress after coming out of prison. His relationship with his father is now a little bit different. I feel, in these last two seasons, we saw Archie more of a boy; but I think after coming out of prison, his relationship with this man, he sees his dad as man-to-man instead of boy-to-man. There’s a really cool scene that we got to play with me and Luke, in, I think, [episode] 3.08 actually; where it’s the first time we get to kind of play with the new dynamic in that relationship of Archie, kinda fending for himself now.”
- The Long-Lasting Effects of G&G in the Prison. We saw that the Warden of the prison was playing G&G and was caught up in whatever was also going on in the town regarding the game. Apa said that the game permeating the prison “has lasting effects on Riverdale because of the way that it affects the gang. All those things will surface at some stage. It makes [what happens with] the gang make a lot more sense and it makes other deaths make more sense. Betty and Jughead discovering what’s happened in that prison, and Archie telling them what’s been going on and what’s he discovered inside the prison, helps them to understand what’s going on in Riverdale while he was gone. It’s all tied together.
- The Lodge Family. This family has been caught up in the prison storyline because of Hiram’s actions in getting Archie into prison and Veronica’s desire to save her boyfriend from her father’s machinations. Still, Mark Consuelos (Hiram Lodge) insists that his character “really really cares about his daughter. He has a very strange way of going about it, but he really cares about her. I think you’ll see along the way that he is trying to set her up to succeed even though it looks like [what she does] might equal failure, but he’s getting her to prove herself in many way and I think he realizes that, whether she likes it or not, she’s very much like him.” After Archie’s escape, we saw Hiram and Veronica go head-to-head and Hermione warned both of them that their obsession with Archie was going to ruin that family. It was one of the few times that Hermione asserted herself in such an outspoken manner. Marisol Nichols (Hermione Lodge) said that “I can tell you [that] Hermione is definitely reaching her breaking point with what she’s willing to do and not willing to do. And she will redeem herself in terms of not being in Hiram’s shadow so much.” Mark Consuelos hinted that “I do think the dynamic has become very interesting between [Hiram and Hermione]. Whereas last season there was a little bit of demurring to his whatever he wants, I think there’s going to be a little bit of pushback or a lot of pushback [on her part].”
- Hiram’s Desire to Take Down Archie. Consuelos explained that “I think [Archie] represents a lot to Hiram. I think he represents probably a threat to him who did a lot — as far as he’s concerned — while he was in prison. I think [Hiram] will go to any length [to destroy Archie], I mean. It gets darker. It gets really really dark. It’s going to be interesting to see how can these guys ever co-exist in the same town.”
