OUTLANDER Recap: The After-Effects of Mistaken Identity

Photo: Starz

A case of mistaken identity dominated the end of last week’s OUTLANDER when Jamie assaulted Roger, believing him to be the man that had raped Brianna. The doting father returned home at the beginning of this episode and kept Roger’s appearance from his daughter, although he confessed to her that Claire had told him what happened. She asked if an unwed pregnant daughter was an embarrassment and he said he could never be angry at her for something that had been done to her, but suggested she get married for the baby’s sake. Hard on herself for not fighting off her attacker, he goaded her into admitting that it wasn’t her fault. She also confessed that she knew what had happened between him and Black Jack at Wentworth and was wondering whether killing her attacker would make her feel better.

We soon caught up with Roger, who had been sold off to the Mohawk tribe by Young Ian. Beaten as he was, he was trying to help a fellow prisoner who is ill. Later that night, as the tribesmen sat around a fire, Roger told the other man that he is keeping track of landmarks for his return…and he absolutely intends to escape and return to his wife.

Back at the Fraser home, Claire was offering to perform a surgical abortion for her daughter, if that’s what Brianna wanted. But Brianna believed it’s possible that Roger may be the father, prompting Claire to tell her she needs to go through the stones now. After all, they don’t know what might happen if you try to cross the stones with a baby into your arms. In other words, Brianna won’t have much time left with her parents if she decides to return home to her time.

After reminiscing about future conveniences with her mother the next day, Brianna experienced a nightmare involving Roger and Stephen Bonnet. After waking her from her nightmare, Lizzie admitted that she saw the man who raped Brianna and that Jamie had beaten him. But Brianna quickly realized that it was Roger who arrived at Fraser’s Ridge, not Bonnet. Confronting her father, Brianna soon called Jamie a savage for what he had done. Claire admitted that Bonnet was the msn who attacked Brianna, while Brianna demanded to know where Roger was. Ian admitted that he had sold him to the Mohawk and things became dire when Claire said that the Mohawk lived 700 miles away and had just been passing through.

Jamie insisted he and Ian would find Roger, but Brianna said that they would all go. And she told Claire she would be keeping the baby, because there was the slightest chance it could be Roger’s child. When Claire said she would be there to help Brianna, Brianna insisted her mother go to find Roger while she remained behind. As Jamie pointed out, a pregnant woman would slow them down considerably. While Claire said she would never leave Brianna and Lizzie alone at Fraser’s Ridge, Jamie suggested she head to Jocasta’s with Murtagh to accompany them.

As Brianna and Claire said goodbye, Brianna told her mother to admit everything to Roger when she found him. “You have to bring him back to me,” Brianna begged Claire. Jamie continued to try and mend fences with his daughter and vowed to find Roger, while Brianna insisted she would hold him to that vow. With a final hug for her mother, Brianna and Lizzie joined Murtagh as they headed to River Run, while the others set off on horseback to find Roger.

Still traveling with the Mohawk, Roger lost his footing and fell down a hill. Nearly breaking his hand as the tribesmen attempted to pull him up by the rope attached to his wrist, he managed to break free of the rope and escaped. The Mohawk chased after him, but even in his weakened state he managed to elude them. Soon after, we spotted Brianna and her little party arriving at River Run. Murtagh shared a warm reunion with Jocasta, while Brianna told her Great-Aunt the truth of her circumstances and Jocasta welcomed her into her home.

Still trying to catch his bearings in the forest, Roger was shocked to find a stone grouping much like the one he had used to travel through time. Clearly torn about what he should do, we ended this week’s OUTLANDER with his outstretched hand reaching for a stone. The question is: will Roger return to the future without Brianna?
