SUPERNATURAL: Samantha Smith Talks Mary’s Return and Her Growing Relationship With her Sons

Mary Winchester returns in this week’s SUPERNATURAL. Sam is in contact with his mother after Dean’s recent re-possessing by Michael to share that his elder brother is acting strangely — presumably due to the increasing noise of Michael trapped in his head and being shaken by whatever he read in Billie’s book. Dean will eventually head out to meet up with Donna for a quick visit before traveling on to Donna’s cabin, where his mother has been staying along with her new boyfriend, Bobby Singer.

For those who had hoped to see Mary and Donna meet, you’re going to have to wait a bit longer. As Samantha Smith told us on the red carpet for SUPERNATURAL’s 300th episode, the two women won’t be crossing paths in this episode. But Smith believes the two women would get along if they did get a chance to meet up: “You won’t see us meet on camera, but I think Mary loves any strong woman. So she’s going to respect and be down with [Donna].”

Expect to see more about Mary and Bobby’s developing relationship in the coming episode. When asked where their relationship will go, Smith teased, “I think more importantly is where it came from — which was camaraderie and trust and having gone through hardship together. As far as where it will go, it’s too soon to tell. They’re both very damaged people. I think weirdly Bobby is even more damaged than Mary. So that’s a lot to sort through, but the next time you see us some more of that will come to light.”

While Mary and Bobby’s relationship will continue to have to overcome hurdles, there are some solid relationships in Mary’s life: her relationship with her sons. “I think that they’ve come a lot way, again with trust and maybe the fear that she’s going to disappear again forever is abated. And I think that they’re more friends now than anything. It’s not like they’re going to listen to her, but they do have a respect and there’s so much love there. And typical Winchesters, always trying to take one for the team to protect everyone else. It’s just…we all take turns.”

While Dean is hanging out with his mother and Sam is preoccupied by his brother’s troubles, we’re also going to see the return of Mark Pellegrino’s Nick, the man formerly possessed by Lucifer. Executive Producer Phil Sgriccia teased that this episode “is kind of almost the peak of [Nick’s] storyline this season. It still continues after this, but this is a big moment.” And Donna is going to tie into what’s happening with Nick, as you can see from the photo below. In fact, Sgriccia said that Donna is involved because “she’s the sheriff, so she’s doing her sheriff duties.” Which could mean that Nick’s very bad deeds are likely going to start attracting police attention.

SUPERNATURAL airs on Thursdays at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
