OUTLANDER Season 4 Finale Recap: The Quest to Save Roger

Photo: Starz

It’s New York, 1770, and Roger is still reeling from the events of the penultimate episode. Fortunately for him, the Frasers have found Shadow Lake and Jamie is trying to locate the other man. Unfortunately, with Roger trapped in the “idiot hut”, Jamie can’t spot him. And so the trio of travellers head towards the village to speak with the tribe. After Jamie announces that they have come to trade, Ian says they have come looking for a man they sold — and they are prepared to trade for that man. Things seem to be going well until the Mohawk spot Claire’s necklace…the “Otter’s Tooth”, as they call it. As a result of the stone, they refuse to trade with them and demand that they leave.

The trio head away from the village while Jamie announces he plans to return that night, but Claire tells him it’s not safe. Still, Jamie is determined to return Roger to his daughter. As they stop at a clearing, a group of Mohawk surround the group and demand the stone, but Claire wants to trade it for Roger. She also demands an explanation of why the stone is so important to them. Apparently years before a Native American man wearing the stone came to the tribe to warn them to “kill the white man, or the white man will kill you. Kill them before it is too late.” Several of the tribesman followed the man and returned with the scalps of the white men. The Chief at the time demanded that the man leave, but he kept returning. The other tribesmen eventually killed the man, but not before he delivered his last warning: “you will be forgotten. The Nations of the Iroquois will be no more. No one will tell your stories. Everything you are will be lost.” Claire explains that she had found the skull of this man along with the stone and the Mohawk believe that the one who possesses the stone will be able to tell how their story ends. She also admits that she saw the ghost of this man and then says she will give them the stone if they turn over Roger.

Later that night, the Mohawk who agreed to help the Frasers are sneaking them into the village. They manage to get Roger out of the hut, but one of the other tribesmen alerts the entire village to the escape. A battle ensues and the Frasers are quickly outmatched. The next morning, the Chief banishes the Mohawk who had helped the Frasers. He also lets the Frasers go, but says that Roger will remain. Jamie asks that the Mohawk trade him for Roger. Claire doesn’t want him to do this, but he says he’ll soon escape and return to her. The Chief accepts the trade, but Ian says that he actually traded himself, not Jamie. Ian makes his uncle promise not to return for him and Claire and Jamie hug him tearfully.

Meanwhile, Murtagh returns to River Run and immediately digs into a feast provided by Jocasta, who confronts Murtagh about being allied with the Regulators. Soon talk turns to Brianna and John’s upcoming wedding and Murtagh is furious about the ceremony, although Jocasta says there is no time to waste. Later, Brianna tells Murtagh that she just used the engagement as a delay tactic, while Murtagh asks why Bri went to see Stephen Bonnet. When Brianna admits she had forgiven Bonnet as much as she could, she also says that she had forgiven Jamie.

As Murtagh enjoys a drink by the fire, he tells Jocasta that he plans to return to the Regulators, but she calls him a fool. He suggests that she use her influence to help the cause. Furious, she tells him exactly what she thinks of him before throwing a drink in his face. As day breaks over River Run, we see that the pair had slept together. She doesn’t want him to leave and he invites her back to bed.

Roger soon punches Jamie in the face, calling him a bastard. He’s furious about what the man had done to him. We also see Ian run the gauntlet of the Mohawk tribe, cutting back and forth to that and Roger beating on Jamie. Ian finds the strength to get up, fighting back and making it to the end of the gauntlet. Having proven himself worthy, the Chief accepts him as one of them — an announcement that brings a large smile to Ian’s face. Back at a nearby clearing, Roger is finally finished beating on Jamie and Claire admits that Brianna had sent them to find him. When Roger demands more answers, Claire has to tell him that he was beaten and sold because he was mistaken for Brianna’s rapist. Tempers flare as Roger learns that Bonnet was the man who attacked Brianna. Roger says he can bring Brianna home because he had found another stone circle. But Claire says that’s impossible because her daughter is pregnant. When Jamie suggests that Roger can leave, he says that he is Brianna’s husband and he will stay — at least until he learns that the child could be Bonnet’s. Roger says he needs time and, while Jamie is demanding an answer now, Claire will give Roger time to be sure of his decision.

Back at River Run, Brianna is giving birth to a son. Two months later, Claire and Jamie have arrived at the estate. Brianna is thrilled to see her parents, but she immediately notices that Roger isn’t with him. Jamie tells his daughter that Roger is alive, but it’s clear that he chose not to return to Brianna. As Claire goes to see Bri after meeting her grandson, Murtagh tells Jamie that Bonnet is dead.

Claire tells her daughter she wants them to return to Fraser’s Ridge so that Bri’s family can take care of her. The next day, the group are preparing to depart River Run. As Brianna’s packs upstairs in her room, she spots Roger approaching the house and runs out to greet him. The pair share a joyful reunion and Roger tells her to “take me to see my son”.

But the happiness is cut short when a group of Red Coats approach the house, presumably to capture Murtagh. Jocasta orders her servants to hide Murtagh, but the Red Coats are there to find Jamie and they have come with a letter from the Governor. The Governor has ordered Jamie to led a militia to fight the Regulators — with his first order to hunt down and kill Murtagh.
