Hulu Upfront Announcements: New Series Orders, Renewal News and Trailers for THE HANDMAID’S TALE and VERONICA MARS

Today during Hulu’s Upfront presentation, the streaming service made several announcements, including the pick up of new shows, two series renewals, and released trailers for the third season of THE HANDMAID’S TALE and the revival of VERONICA MARS.

First, Hulu and Marvel are expanding their partnership with two new live-action series: GHOST RIDER and HELSTROM. According to Hulu, GHOST RIDER, “also known as Robbie Reyes, is a quintessential antihero, consumed by hellfire and supernaturally bound to a demon. Reyes lives on the Texas/Mexico border and when he unleashes the Rider, Robbie brings vengeance for the innocents he encounters, but struggles to control the power he wields. Marvel’s Ghost Rider is executive produced by Ingrid Escajeda, who will serve as showrunner, Paul Zbyszewski and Marvel’s Jeph Loeb.”

Meanwhile, “Daimon and Ana Helstrom are the son and daughter of a mysterious and powerful serial killer in Marvel’s HELSTROM. The siblings have a complicated dynamic as they track down the terrorizing worst of humanity — each with their attitude and skills. Marvel’s Helstrom is executive produced by Paul Zbyszewski, who will serve as showrunner and Marvel’s Jeph Loeb.”

Both shows are set to debut in 2020.

In addition, Hulu is partnering with Vox Media Studios, David Chang’s Majordomo Media, and Chrissy Teigen’s Suit & Thai Productions to develop and produce a slate of premium food-centric programming for the platform. First up is a show starring Chang and Tiger and tentatively called FAMILY STYLE, which would “revolve around the ways in which people express their love for friends and family by cooking and eating together.”

In other new series news, Hulu has ordered a series called NINE PERFECT STRANGERS, which is based on the Liane Moriarty book of the same name. Produced by Nicole Kidman and Bruna Papandrea, and co-written by David E. Kelley and John Henry Butterworth, the series is expected to debut in Hulu in late 2020. It “takes place at a boutique health-and-wellness resort that promises healing and transformation as nine stressed city dwellers try to get on a path to a better way of living. Watching over them during this ten-day retreat is the resort’s director Masha (played by Kidman), a woman on a mission to reinvigorate their tired minds and bodies. However, these nine “perfect” strangers have no idea what is about to hit them.”

Hulu also confirmed a limited series order for THE DROPOUT, starring Kate McKinnon as Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. The show will chronicle Holmes’ rise and fall as her company was exposed for failing to achieve the medical testing miracle she had claimed.

In addition, Hulu announced that it had renewed two existing shows. First, PEN15 has been picked up for a second season consisting of 14 episodes. And comedy series RAMY has been renewed for a 10 episode second season.

Finally, Hulu has released trailers for two upcoming shows: the third season of THE HANDMAID’S TALE and the revival/continuation series VERONICA MARS.
