Today Netflix announced that the fifth season of THE CROWN will be its last, with British actress Imelda Staunton stepping into the role of Queen Elizabeth for the show’s final season. Series creator Peter Morgan said this about the casting “I’m absolutely thrilled to confirm Imelda Staunton as Her Majesty the The Queen for the fifth and final season, taking THE CROWN into the 21st century. Imelda is an astonishing talent and will be a fantastic successor to Claire Foy and Olivia Colman.” Imelda Staunton said “I have loved watching THE CROWN from the very start. As an actor it was a joy to see how both Claire Foy and Olivia Colman brought something special and unique to Peter Morgan’s scripts. I am genuinely honoured to be joining such an exceptional creative team and to be taking THE CROWN to its conclusion.”

The third season of THE CROWN recently debuted on Netflix, with Olivia Colman stepping into the role of Queen after Claire Foy portrayed Elizabeth in the first two seasons. The third season covered the mid-1960s to late-1970s, covering the death of Winston Churchill, the investiture of Prince Charles and the start of his relationship with Camilla, and ended with Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee. Presumably, the upcoming fourth season (premiere date to be announced) will feature the introduction of Diana Spencer into the Royal Family.
