Right now, all around the world, everyday people from doctors and nurses to grocery workers, custodians, first responders, factory and transit workers, creators and developers, neighbors and strangers and so many others are joining the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. Regular people are using their talents, experience, drive, brains and heart to help around the world and next door.

Tonight’s NCIS episode, “Blarney,” the delayed St. Patrick’s Day episode, takes a look at what makes someone a hero. Much has been written on heroes recently, perhaps due to the increase of movies and television series about superheroes. Colleges offer classes on The Psychology of Superheroes. PSYCHOLOGY TODAY and THE ATLANTIC have examined the interest in superheroes. Batman and Iron Man, two of the few superheroes who do not have exceptional powers as a result of being from another planet or being bitten by a radioactive spider, often are listed as “favorites.”

The general consensus seems to be that the popularity stems from neither Batman nor Iron Man having unusual powers. Their strengths and abilities were accomplished by using their brains. Granted, they are both extremely smart, but still human. The prevailing thought is that fans favor those characters because they think, “If regular people without superpowers can be heroes, why can’t I?” The answer is, “You can.”

On tonight’s NCIS episode, “Blarney,” two very un-super-powered heroes, Palmer (Brian Dietzen) and Kasie (Diona Reasonover) find themselves held hostage in the local diner by thieves involved in a jewelry store robbery that has gone badly.

While the rest of the NCIS team members are doing what they can to solve a murder, Palmer and Kasie “show great courage” (the definition of a hero) and call on their “superhero hearts” and “regular people” brains in the dire situation to keep the others in the diner safe from harm.

Directed by Rocky Carroll (regular cast member, Leon Vance), “Blarney” was written by NCIS Executive Producer, Scott Williams. Guest stars on tonight’s NCIS are Leif Gantvoort, Shahine Ezell, Scott Deckert, Bellina Logan, Connie Jackson, Scott Christopher, Siri Miller, Selina Kaye, Mario Ardila, Jr., Harvey J. Alperin, Casey Leach and Linsay Rousseau.

The NCIS folks are thanking and supporting the heroes who are helping fight the coronavirus pandemic on Twitter, ending their tweets with the hashtag, #InThisTogether

Everyone can be a hero. Show your support. Do what you can.

NCIS airs tonight (March 31) at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on CBS in the U.S. and on Global TV in Canada.
