When The 100 premiered on the CW in March of 2014, fans of the post-apocalyptic narrative fell in love with the story and clung to its characters. But now, the world within this sci-fi drama series really is coming to an end as the television series wraps up its 7th and final season starting in May 2020.
The series began with a group of eclectic people who had survived a nuclear apocalypse that wiped out most of the planet’s population nearly one hundred years earlier. Having just returned from a space habitat, aptly named The Ark, the 100 juvenile delinquents who landed back on Earth were sent there as pawns by the governing bodies from The Ark to determine whether or not the planet could be a place for human life to thrive again.
What Happened Last Season?
In the previous season of The 100, we left off on a very strange note that had us scratching our heads and wanting to ask a lot of questions. Octavia, one of the main characters, died – but did she actually? After being stabbed by Hope, she fell into the arms of Bellamy where she then disappeared.
Right before, when she and the others had been taken to the underground room with the symbols similar to the ones covering her back, the green light they had seen once before enveloped the room almost as a response to Octavia’s touch upon the room’s symbols. The question now is whether Octavia activated a portal of sorts through which she disappeared.
We also saw developments with other characters in the show as they woke to discover themselves now on a new planet called Sanctum. Though the planet at first glance appeared to be a good society run by the ruling families, there were hidden dangers to be wary of including the Children of Gabriel, a group of rebels unhappy with the current regime.
What Can We Expect In the Final Season?
In the final season, the focus will shift slightly and become less about the warfare and violence and more about how the remaining members of the original 100 can find a peaceful way of coexisting after what has happened.
The show’s creator Jason Rothenberg had told Entertainment Weekly during an interview that the ending of the series will be “our version of a happy ending.” He also discussed with them that the show’s true meaning and morals would be revealed at the end of this season, but it would probably be much different than the show’s loyal viewers might think.
He said, “we’re trying to say something [with this last season].” When referring to the moral that the show has yet to shed light, he shared that “it won’t be ‘People are horrible, we all suck, we’re willing to kill everyone and everything and do anything to survive.’ There’s a higher purpose.”
The 100’s first episode of its final season will air on Wednesday, May 20th at 8 pm on the CW.
