Since Wonder Woman’s inception in 1941, leading female characters have been taking television screens by storm across the world, from romance to comedy, and action to thriller. Across streaming services, it has been found that 42% of shows include female protagonists, which, in a world that is striving for gender equality, is almost there. The two biggest streaming services, Netflix and Amazon Prime, list a range of female-centred series and we want to take a look at just some of our favourites below.
Why is Wonder Woman an icon?
First things first, it’s important to not forget about the path that Marvel’s first female superhero carved for female leading roles. Via her headstrong persona, Wonder Woman has demonstrated that females can conquer the world while following their passions and discovering love. Her success is paramount and can be recognised via her presence across a range of platforms, from television to magazines, games and apparel.
Landing on clothing and slot machines across the world, much like those on Scatters Casino Canada, Wonder Woman has gone above and beyond television and has dominated almost every industry with her presence. One example that demonstrates this is the aforementioned slot machines, as people across the world can benefit from free spins and rewards by accessing slots for real money that are painted with Wonder Woman’s face. Showing that women can be successful in multiple industries, she has paved the way for other leading female roles, some of which we will take a look at below.
The Marvellous Mrs Maisel
First aired in 2017, this American television series is available to stream on Amazon Prime and follows the life of Mrs Maisel, who finds her feet as a comedian in the ‘50s. From divorce to stardom, Mrs Maisel pushes the boundaries for women in the ‘50s and begins to show the world just what women are made of. With traditional views broadcast throughout from family and members of the public, Mrs Maisel isn’t afraid to challenge them with her comedic nature.
The Bold Type
Also aired in 2017, this series is available to watch on Netflix and follows the life of three millennials who aim to tackle New York head-on at a women’s fashion magazine. Journeying through career development and relationship struggles, the three best friends demonstrate what it’s like to be a 20-something-year-old and be your own boss.
The newest of the three, this series first aired on Netflix at the beginning of 2021 and follows the life of Tully and Kate, two best friends, who much like the leading characters in The Bold Type, work their way up to the top of the ladder as journalists. Whereas one finds their career, one finds love, and the story shows how women can have it all.
While each of these three female-centred television programmes don’t show what it’s like to possess magic and conquer the world like Wonder Woman, they do go a long way to show that women are superheroes in their own way. In dominating the industry and appearing on TV screens across the world, these characters show that woman are successful and can conquer their professional and personal dreams.
