Here’s a bit of sad news for fans of THE GOOD PLACE: the show’s upcoming fourth season will be its last. Fortunately, NBC hasn’t cancelled the show, but the creator, Mike Schur, has made the announcement that the final season will begin airing this fall. In a letter posted on the show’s official Twitter account (see below), Schur talks about how the writing staff started mapping out the entire series once it was picked up for a second season. And they decided that four seasons (just over 50 episodes total) was a good number for the show as a whole. While there has been some debate about whether the show should continue beyond that, Schur and the other writers ultimately decided to stick to their original plan.
THE GOOD PLACE has been a critical darling throughout its run. Originally premised as a season where Kristen Bell’s character appeared to be mistakenly assigned to “The Good Place” upon her death, the series soon delivered a twist by revealing that Bell’s character, Eleanor, and the friends she had made along the way were actually in a unique torture arrangement within “The Bad Place”. Upon escaping (along with their new ally and former torturer, Michael, played by Ted Danson), they eventually found themselves back alive and on Earth. The most recent season ended with the group trying to prove they belong in the real “Good Place”, resulting in Eleanor and her love Chidi being separated thanks to a memory wipe, and Eleanor taking over in the Michael role. THE GOOD PLACE will return for its final season this fall.
