Channel Surfing with C.T.

March 6, 2008 By theTVaddict 6 Comments

I knew little Jamie was gonna wind up face-down in the pool sooner or later on ONE TREE HILL. I actually thought it would happen in the first episode, when pop Nathan was still in the wheel chair. I assumed Nathan would pull himself up from the wheelchair and save his son’s life. But no, they didn’t go the predictable route. Or at least not that predictable. Anybody else assume that when Brooke and her boy toy found a woman passed out in that glam New York City pad, it would be Victoria? Why is the show using Daphne Zuniga so infrequently? And am I wrong, or was Mouth completely missing from this week’s outing? And Lindsay? As much as I’m loving the show, it’s in serious need of balancing.

You’ve gotsta love the makeover episode of AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL, if only to see which girls will emerge looking hot and which will wind up on the “ghetto mess” side. Every year, a girl cries, and this year it was Fatima, who wept while getting a weave. Now I’m told by a friend who has had her fair share of weaves that it is a pretty awful process. But for God’s sake, Fatima was the victim of genital mutilation in her home country! Surely the discomfort of a weave can’t begin to compare to having your vagina sewn shut! Meanwhile, Allison was this week’s “oblivious moron”, what with her insistence that she rocked her photo shoot despite the fact that the photographer — who said of her “the lights are on, but nobody’s home” — and Mr. Jay were clearly unhappy with her performance. And just for the record, when Miss Tyra asks if you know how to say “thank you” and then the panel looks at you expectantly, be smart enough to say — all together now — thank you! Oh, a special note to the producers: We viewers are willing to put up with product placement, but there’s a limit. This single hour featured Apple Bottom jeans, specific Cover Girl products (as well as the weekly mention of the company with the makeup giant), Wal-Mart, Wal-Mart.com and Elle McPherson’s line of “knickers.” Frankly, I was amazed that with all those products to be placed, they found time for actual commercials!

Channel Surfing with C.T.

February 27, 2008 By theTVaddict 9 Comments

I seriously fall more in love with ONE TREE HILL every week, Trust me, no one on the planet is more surprised by this development than me. But this show isn’t just a guilty pleasure… it is the guilty pleasure of the season. I mean, last night’s episode gave us everything… including the rare male bitchwalk. (You know… that scene in every show from BUFFY to POPULAR in which a group of hot chicks strut down the hall in slow motion to a pulsating soundtrack… which is exactly what we got when Lucas, Nathan and the team entered the gym for the game.) I was never a fan of Peyton… until the show turned her into a viper. When Brooke urged her gal pal to take the high road, I was shouting “No!” And damned if things didn’t go to hell when she blew Lindsay out of the water with news that Lucas had given her a hand-me-down ring. (Although frankly, I’d have held onto that bombshell until the wedding day.) And didn’t it seem odd that Mouth opted to cover his first game by sitting in the school’s hallway? But I really love that a shooting which happened four years ago continues to haunt the characters. Sure, that probably wouldn’t be the case were it four seasons later as opposed to a result of the fast-forward, but I’m still gonna give the show props.

I can only compare CBS’ BIG BROTHER and Showtime’s live AFTER DARK presentation as perhaps the best illustration ever put forth of the difference between edited, pre-packaged “reality” and unfiltered, uncensored reality. For every night when the camera focuses on such incredibly boring yet oh-so-real minutia as Joshua brushing his teeth or Ryan smoking his millionth cigarette there are the jaw-dropping moments such as Natalie and Chelsia’s full-frontal striptease followed by the orgiastic make-out session held by the housemates in the pool. Yeah, CBS definitely got their money’s worth out of that inhibition-loosening margarita party. And every time the camera cuts to showmancers Chelsia and James making out, I can’t help wondering how she’ll react upon re-emerging into society and learning about that videotape making the rounds in which he swaps spit with a guy before… well, you’ll just have to google it. God knows Julie Chen won’t get the reaction shot I’m dying to see. After Jen proclaimed that her boyfriend was a racist — and then vehemently denied having said as much when confronted by the guy — my best friend and I wondered what the girl was thinking. But when Jen and Parker were evicted and Julie Chen failed to ask, “How do you think Ryan will react to learning that you did, in fact, call him a racist?”, the real question became how Chenbot keeps her job.

Happy Thanksgiving From the TV Addict

November 22, 2007 By theTVaddict 1 Comment

On this cold and chilly Thanksgiving Thursday in Toronto Canada, the TV Addict is going to put aside his holiday jealousy [being Canadian, there’s no parade for us today!] and spend a few minutes talking about what I’m thankful for in the world of Television.

To the readers of theTVaddict.com. Without all of you — my fellow TV Addicts — this fake job would be far less exciting. I wish you all the best this Holiday season and look forward to many more seasons to come.

Special extra holiday thanks to Amrie, Jenny, Joanna, Tim G and C.T. for taking time out of their busy lives to share their TV Addiction with all of us. Your passion and dedication for the small screen make me, and thousands of readers smile every week .

Thanks to the writers, creative team, actors and crew of every single one of the TV Addict’s favorite shows. Without your incredible work, theTVaddict.com would be a blank page.

Thanks to the cast of FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS for finally giving us something worth watching on Friday nights.

Thanks to ABC for picking up DIRTY SEXY MONEY for an entire season. No one delivers lines like Natalie Zea’s Karen Darling. Last night’s quote of the night, “It’s so her to come along, isn’t it?”

Thanks to the cast of HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER for giving this TV Addict a reason to look forward to Mondays.

Thanks to Cait at Fox, Winson at the WB and Courtney from NMS for giving this TV Addict three incredibly unique opportunities this year. The Fox Fall 2007 Launch Party will never be forgotten.

Thanks to all the new friends I’ve made in the world of television blogging. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one online with a slightly unhealthy addiction to television.

Thanks to Ari and Renessa for listening to my podcast rambling. And to all of you for listening.

Thanks to my favorite fictional BROTHERS & SISTERS. I laugh just thinking about how many bottles of wine will be consumed in the Walker household this weekend.

Thanks to Tina Fey for being the coolest woman on TV and making smart sexy again.

Thanks to FX for recognizing the brilliance of DAMAGES. Renewing it for not only one, but two seasons.

Thanks to Showtime for stepping out of HBO’s shadow. DEXTER, WEEDS, CALIFORNICATION… what’s next?

Congratulations to TV Addict readers Shannon, Vance and Natalie who correctly guessed that this year’s Entertainment Weekly Fall TV Preview cover girl would indeed be PRIVATE PRACTICE’s Kate Walsh. Once again you guys and gals prove you’re far smarter than the average TV Addict.

Amrie’s Take on TV: Summer in Review

August 14, 2007 By theTVaddict 4 Comments

I think after a summer with nice weather like we’ve experienced here in the Philly area, I should be a lot tanner than I am. I’ve spent way too many hours hooked to the television watching some of the greatest summer TV ever made!

Remember the summer days when we waited through a million hours of boring reruns and bad reality TV (oh wait, so like ABC these days…) until it was finally time for the season premieres in late September? It has been like a breath of fresh air with all of the great shows that we’ve been privy to this summer.

Where do I even begin?

Damages continues to keep me hooked. Glenn Close sells a scene like no one else on TV. She can be cruel and caring and loving and hating and every emotion under the sun and she knows how to play them all. As cliché as it sounds, I would honestly watch her read the phone book. F/X keeps the action coming this week as we learn a little bit more about Katie Connor’s back story, and the role she plays in both Frobisher’s and Patty Hewes’ cases. We learn where Ellen’s loyalties lie, and we learn where Tom’s loyalties may not. It keeps me guessing, that’s for sure!

Rescue Me is one of those shows that I started watching from day one, and haven’t missed an episode. Sure, Tommy Gavin is no saint. Sure, the rest of his crew is as screwed up as he is. I mean, in what world does selling a baby to your ex-cousin-in-law-ex-lover for $500,000 after almost dropping said baby into the river make any sense? I’m going to stick with it. I’m in this far! Coming up on the show, we get to see the original Probie hit an all new low, and one of the best interventions that’s ever been shown on TV. We’re also left hanging, if you will, with our anti-hero as he gets stuck after a heart-to-heart with my favorite character. Also – who knew that Tommy’s dad was still alive? Why do I feel like he died last season? Apparently not!

The 4400 continues to delight!! It took me a while to hop on this train, but there is so much new stuff discovered every week that they keep me so involved! I love every character! It’s one of those shows that keeps me coming back because I’m so invested in the lives of the characters that I can’t imagine going a week without checking in on them. Kyle with a power, and Isabelle without them. Billy Campbell playing Jordan Collier as the Messiah. Tom Baldwin and Diana Skouris as great as ever as best friends and partners. I hear we have big big things coming for the big finale – I’m along for the ride! Stay tuned this week for Richard’s return, and in the coming weeks, a surprise visit from the recently departed Lily!

Amrie’s Take on TV: Summer TV

June 26, 2007 By theTVaddict 8 Comments

We’re not even one week into summer, and already, summer TV has me going nuts. I’m obsessed with great new comedies, and worshipping established dramas. Usually, I can’t wait to get to the end of the summer for fall TV to start, but with the stuff the networks are throwing at me, I don’t want the summer to end!

Here’s my take on what you should be watching if you haven’t already been –

1. Flight of the Conchords – oh my heavens, these two New Zealenders, Bret and Jermaine, have made life so much better this summer. Aside from reruns of The New Adventures of Old Christine (which have really been better than I would have given them credit), there isn’t another show on TV that has me laughing. Their musical interludes are just the right kind of crazy that make the show work. They’re awkwardly hilarious, which is what I would use (and probably have used on more than one occasion) to describe my own personal hero, Michael Cera. Dry, unaware of just how hilarious they are, this is a show worth checking out for sure!

2. Rescue Me – I’ll be the first to admit that Season 3 lacked some luster. The plots were out there in a bad way, and all the “everyone wants to sleep with Tommy” crap was starting to get on my nerves. So far this season, they’re handling everything with aplomb. Tommy’s got women chasing him, but not in the crazy way they used to. Tatum O’Neill is really cracking me up as Sean Garrity’s wife. Garrity is still hilariously dumb, and Mike (no longer The Probie) is most likely going to lose his mother, but he just can’t accept it. Franco and Natalie is believable, and I like the friendship he’s formed with her brother. Chief, Lou, even the replacement Chief, and Peter Tolan as the head of the station – it’s just great stuff. If you tuned out for whatever reason in Season 3, Season 4 is the time to get back in – Susan Sarandon’s coming up soon, too, and expect a big shock in this week’s episode that will blow you way!

The Tudors Is A Royal Treat

April 1, 2007 By theTVaddict 1 Comment

the tudors Jonathan Rhys Meyers

Proving that there’s more than one kind of “reality” television, Showtime’s latest offering, THE TUDORS (premiering Sunday, April 1 at 10 p.m. ET, with episodes one and two currently available both on-line and via Showtime On Demand) offers viewers a sexy, sudsy saga based on the life of England’s King Henry VIII. Borrowing a page from HBO’s ROME, Showtime’s royal fleshfest offers up a history lesson one isn’t likely to sleep through. As the series opens, England and France sit poised on the very cusp of war, with King Henry (the charismatic Jonathan Rhys Meyers in a career-defining performance) eager to send his troops into battle if only to guarantee his own name will be remembered for generations to come. But his trusted (perhaps more than he should be) advisor, Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, proposes that the young King seek fame by instead brokering peace. And thus is set into motion a series of events which put the unhappily married king on a collision course with the beautiful Anne Boleyn (the lovely Natalie Dormer, whose flirtatious glances can’t help but remind one of Juliet Landau’s BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER alter ego, Drucilla… during her saner moments).
