ORPHAN BLACK Redux: Adventures in Babysitting, Sisterly Bonding and Rehab
In last week’s ORPHAN BLACK episode “Governed As It Were By Chance,” life began to settle into a new unexpected routine. For Sarah (Tatiana Maslany), it meant giving Cal (Michiel Huisman) and Kira (Skyler Wexler) some bonding time while she went in search of answers back at Mrs. S’s (Maria Doyle Kennedy) house and exploring at Rachel’s apartment. For Alison, it meant finding out that she had checked herself into rehab – maybe because she was drinking excessively or maybe just to get away from her monitor husband Donnie (Kristian Bruun). For Cosima, it was adjusting to the fact that she was terribly ill and desperate to find an answer while keeping her clone sisters in the dark to her condition. And for Helena, it meant getting the hell away from those crazy Proletheans and finding someone she could really trust – which turned about to be Sarah, the sister that had shot her and left her for dead. ORPHAN BLACK Redux: The Surprising End to the Search for Kira and Mrs. S
In last week’s episode “Governed by Sound Reason and True Religion,” Cosima got a new lab, Alison went to a funeral, Helena got a new home, and Sarah (Tatiana Maslany) continued her hot pursuit of her missing daughter Kira (Skyler Wexler). But in the end, only one clone was really happy with the results.
When Kira first went missing, we feared that the search for her would take an entire season, so it was a great relief that this past episode finally reunited Sarah and Kira, and briefly Mrs. S (Maria Doyle Kennedy). For after quickly ascertaining that Rachel had been bluffing when she said she had Kira, Sarah got right back on track in searching for Kira; and, fortunately, that search ended up not being that long as Kira was only being in used in bait to lure Sarah into a Prolethian trap — unbeknownst to Mrs. S, who simply thought her friends were helping her and Kira escape the country. But like usual, everyone underestimates Sarah. The second she had a chance, Sarah grabbed Kira and high-tailed it away from the so-called safehouse. She is also mighty lucky that Mrs. S proved to be on her side and could wield kitchen utensils and a shotgun in such a handy, lethal fashion. But with Sarah, Kira and Felix (Jordan Gavaris) making a hasty exit out of town, where does that leave everyone else? [Read more…]
ORPHAN BLACK Redux: Sarah Got A Gun, Felix Got Chapped, and Kira Got Her Picture Taken!
Season 2 of ORPHAN BLACK was off to a rip-roaring start as Sarah Manning (Tatiana Maslany) frantically searched for her missing daughter Kira (Skyler Wexler) – unfortunately, with both the Neolutionists and the Prolethians closing in. So it was a race against the clock for Sarah to get a gun and take down her sister pro-clone Rachel at the Dyad Institute in order to rescue Kira.
It took was some fancy clone shenanigans to get Sarah into Dyad; namely Alison had to procure a gun and get it to Sarah without the nosy cops and their monitors from finding out. Then Sarah infiltrated Dyad posing as Cosima into order to slip past Dr. Leekie (Matt Frewer) and security; and, fortunately, Rachel’s insistence on having Paul (Dylan Bruce) nearby also worked to Sarah’s advantage once things got a bit dicey.
But the terrifying surprise of it all was Rachel never had Kira; someone else had taken her. So all of Sarah’s efforts and planning to confront Rachel were for nothing. The moment Sarah realized that she did not know who had her daughter or where to begin searching for Kira was when we saw her strength disintegrate inside her. It was the helplessness that any parent would feel not knowing where their child was – and that moment of truth was devastating. [Read more…]
STAR-CROSSED Scoop: The Cast Dishes on Tonight’s Stormy New Episode as Human/Alien Relations Heat Up During a Hurricane
In this week’s new episode of STAR-CROSSED, “What Storm Is This That Blows So,” a hurricane hits Edendale and forces the students at Marshall High into lock-down. But due to the suspicious nature and suddenness of the storm, Lukas (Titus Makin Jr.) and Sophia (Brina Palencia) investigate to find out what may have been the real cause of this ferocious visit from Mother Nature. Also suspicious is Roman (Matt Lanter) who believes that Teri (Chelsea Gilligan) may be conspiring with her Trag mom Vega (Merle Dandridge) in a plot to harm Emery (Aimee Teegarden), after last week’s public outing by Castor (Johnathan Schaech). Then Grayson (Grey Damon) puts pressure on Drake (Greg Finley) to reveal the names of the Trags conspiring against the humans. And if that was not enough drama to keep everyone busy during the lock-down, Ms. Benton (Stephanie Jacobsen) needs an Atrian specimen to run further tests on to discover the secrets of cyper.
Hilariously, the one person looking to keep as far away from trouble in this episode is Erik (Jesse Luke), alas he is a bit of a trouble-magnet and he finds himself having to talk himself out of a couple of awkward situations.
But not everything is life and death in this episode. There is occasion for a least two unexpectedly warm and wonderful kisses and the new romances starting to bloom between the Atrians and humans are going to fight hard to keep their various feuding factions from driving them apart. If only life could be all about love, and not having to worry about those who would hunt each of them down for just being different.
This is the dilemma that STAR-CROSSED tackles head-on. The distrust and resentment by the extremists amongst the Atrians and the humans is heating up and its put these teens lives at risk. What is fascinating is seeing how deftly each rises to the challenge and is willing to do whatever it takes to protect their families and love ones, while still trying to keep the peace and find a way to encourage further integration and understanding.
While at WonderCon this past weekend, the cast took a few minutes to talk about the big hurricane episode of STAR-CROSSED and how it impacts their characters. (Also fun are the shout-outs by Aimee Teegarden, Jesse Luken, Matt Lanter and executive producers Adele Lim and Meredith Averill who express their delight in William Shatner’s recent live-tweets of their show.)
