Our Top 10 TV “Davids” of 2008

December 29, 2008 By theTVaddict 6 Comments

If Tina Fey taught us anything this year, well, aside from the fact that “Bitch is the new Black,” it’s this… Between her Emmy award winning day job on 30 ROCK, her weekend gig putting the final nail in Sarah Palin’s political career on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE and her brief foray into silver screen stardom with BABY MAMA, America’s newest sweetheart proved once again that there is no such thing as too much of a good thing.

Advice we at theTVaddict.com are taking to heart as we spend our final days of 2008 creating an endless barrage of “Top 10’s”. Because as much as you don’t want to admit it, everybody loves a list!

OUR TOP 10 TV “DAVIDS” OF 2008
1. David Zayas (Angel Batista on DEXTER)
2. David Shore (Creator of HOUSE)
3. David Cook (AMERICAN IDOL Winner)

5. David Eick (BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Producer)

Our 2008 TV Year in Review (Part IV)

December 26, 2008 By theTVaddict 3 Comments

Least interesting root-for couple: Sure, we’re supposed to be anxiously awaiting the reunion of GOSSIP GIRL’s Serena and Dan, but, um, yeah… we’re not. Every other couple on the show – Jenny and Nate, Rufus and Lily, heck, even Cyrus and Eleanor – rank higher on the list. And then, of course, there’s the devilishly delightful Chuck and Blair, who are their generation’s Sam and Diane.

Best twist, comedy: “Ugh, not another guest star!” we said of 30 ROCK’s appearance by Oprah… until it turned out Liz had actually been talking to a pre-teen Oprah wanna-be.

Biggest jawdropper, daytime: When THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL’s Storm killed himself so sister Katie could have his heart, it was the kind of compelling drama serials rarely tackle today.

Trend most likely to help bring about the downfall of civilization: We have no doubt that execs thing they’re being wildly clever in naming shows things like DANCE YOUR ASS OFF or BITCH, but all they’re really doing is making it tougher for parents to keep their kids from being exposed to things they might prefer to shield them from.

Best performance on a God-awful show: Yes, DO NOT DISTURB was a gigantic waste of time… except for the moments when Molly Stanton was on screen as Nicole, a model whose anger was rooted in hunger.

Oddest decision: Why TRUE BLOOD sucked the suspense out of their season finale by revealing the killer’s identity a week earlier we’ll never know.

Tonight’s TV Addictions: December 19, 2008

December 19, 2008 By theTVaddict 2 Comments

NEW & NOTABLE:
MAMMA’S BOYS (8PM NBC)
If you missed the premiere of this Ryan Seacrest-produced dating show… um, do yourself a favor, and miss this rerun of it, too.

GOOD EATS (8PM FOOD)
Ever wonder the difference between a country ham and a city ham? Okay, come on, you know you have! Well, tonight’s episode, aptly titled “Ham I Am” has the answer. (Clue: It involves salt.)

ALL MY CHILDREN (8PM SOAPnet)
There’s not a lot this show does right these days, but we’ve gotta give AMC props for this episode, in which Pine Valley gathers to remember and mourn Myrtle, played for over three decades by Eileen Herlie. The much-loved actress passed away on October 8 of this year.

NUMB3RS (10PM CBS)
Charlie is forced to work with his nemesis. Having never seen this show, that’s about all we can tell you, but there are two good reasons to catch this episode. First, you can always be assured that wacky chaos will ensue when a good guy is forced to work with his nemesis. And second… well, it ain’t like there’s a whole lot of new shows on tonight!

DEXTER (10PM Showtime)
Did the debate between thetvaddict (“hated it!”) and CT (“loved it!”) leave you wishing you’d watched this killer drama’s season finale? Well, here’s your chance to catch the episode — titled “Do You Take Dexter Morgan?” — and weigh in with your thoughts!

DAYS OF OUR LIVES (11PM SOAPnet)
What do you do when your beau wants to cuddle… but you’re terrified he’ll pat your pregnancy pad and realize that — whoops! — you aren’t actually carrying his child? Tune in and find out how Nicole handles the age old dilemma!

Tonight’s TV Addictions: December 14, 2008

December 14, 2008 By theTVaddict 3 Comments

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
DEXTER (9PM Showtime, 10PM TMN in Canada)
Tonight, DEXTER’s underwhelming third season comes to a close. Tomorrow, we’ll tell you why.

NEW & NOTABLE:
SANTA CLAUSE 2 (8PM ABC)
Fun fact: If you pause your DVR/PVR at exactly 8:32PM, you’ll be able to pinpoint the exact moment Tim Allen realized that he sold his soul to the Disney Corporation.

2008 VIDEO GAME AWARDS (9PM Spike TV)
Host Jack Black offering up laughs, awards and first looks at some of the industries most highly anticipated new games (UNCHARTED 2… drool) sure sounds good. Assuming of course we’re able to pull ourselves away from CoD: WORLD AT WAR.

SKINS (10PM BBC America)
Tony, Sid, Cassie, Jal and Michelle say goodbye to both a friend and their job security as this evening’s second season finale marks the end of the line for our favorite dysfunctional teens from across the pond.

THETVADDICT.COM READER PICK (via Twitter):davezatz: Come on, the ONLY thing to watch on TV tonight is the DEXTER finale.

TV Talkback: Golden Globe Nominations

December 11, 2008 By theTVaddict 3 Comments

Couch Tater: Oh, that wacky Foreign Press Corps members! Unlike their Emmy-nominating brethren, the Golden Globe nominators actually seem to occasionally look beyond the perenial favorites and recognize good work being done on shows other than, say, THE OFFICE. Sure, I’ve never even heard of some of the nominated things… I mean, seriously, what the hell is CRANFORD? But they showed a little love to my beloved TRUE BLOOD (which scored nods for both Anna Panquin as Best Actress and the series as Best Drama), so I have to return the favor and give ’em back at least a little affection. That said, as always, my love comes with a caveat. In this case: What, you couldn’t give BLOOD’s Lois Smith a nod for her portrayal of Sookie’s grandma?

The TV Addict: Look beyond their perennial favorites, are you kidding me? HOUSE, Sally Field, ENTOURAGE, America Ferrera, and worst of all Tony Shalhoub for what sure seems like his 75 nomination! Sadly, the Golden Globes are as predictable as ever. Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled for many of the nominees (30 ROCK, DEXTER, MAD MEN etc…) But if the Hollywood Foreign Press really wanted to recognize True… err, I mean new blood, we’d see nominations for BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, DAMAGES, LOST and Julia Louis Dreyfus.

Tonight’s TV Addictions: December 7, 2008

December 7, 2008 By theTVaddict 1 Comment

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
THE SIMPSONS (8:30PM FOX, Global in Canada)
Much to Lisa’s chagrin, Mr. Burns endangers a rare bee colony after winning a basketball team in a poker game and moving them to Springfield. Not to be confused with the times that Mr. Burns opened a recycling plant (to Lisa’s chagrin), a mega-church (to Lisa’s chagrin) and a casino (I think you get the idea…)

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES (9PM ABC, 7PM CTV in Canada)
Experimental surgery to restore Carlos’ eyesight in December… we smell a Christmas miracle.

DEXTER (9PM Showtime, 10PM TMN in Canada)
Does a killer latter half of the season make up for a lackluster start to the season? Not to encourage the creative team behind DEXTER or anything, but yeah kinda.

BROTHERS & SISTERS (10PM ABC, Global in Canada)
If Tommy and Julia are serious about making their marriage work, it probably would behoove Julia to drop by the Walker household more than twice per season. We’re just saying’.

NEW & NOTABLE:
THE LIBRARIAN: CURSE OF THE JUDAS CHALICE (8PM TNT)
If Lara Croft’s umm.. assets and Indiana Jones’ rugged exterior are a turn off, may we suggest the opposite end of the spectrum. Meet Noah Wyle’s librarian turned treasure hunter.

THETVADDICT.COM READER PICK (via Twitter):
ColoradoKila: Excited for Leverage & The Librarian. I didn’t see 1st Librarian, gotta love Noah W!

5 Ways to Guarantee Job Security in Hollywood

December 4, 2008 By theTVaddict 7 Comments

supernatural winchester brothers

In Michael Ausiello’s latest blind item, he teased that, “If a certain TV star is reading this, they should squint extra hard to read between the lines. How come? They’ve been canned — they just don’t know it yet!”

Now aside from the fact that Ausiello’s blind items are the Hollywood equivalent of cruel and unusual punishment, what with leaving us dying to know what he does, we can’t help thinking that given the sad state of the economy, this isn’t the most ideal time to be an out-of-work actor. (Unless, of course, you’re willing to demean yourself on a reality show in which case the world could, temporarily, be your oyster!)

Which is why, as a public service to those in the industry who are working — and want to ensure that they continue to do so — this TV Addict thought he’d take a moment to offer up a few helpful hints which should prevent you from winding up in the same position as  GREY’S ANATOMY’s T.R. Knight…err… we mean whoever Ausiello’s blind item is referring to!

What We’re Watching: November 30, 2008

November 30, 2008 By theTVaddict 3 Comments

TONIGHT’S TV ADDICTIONS:
DEGRASSI: TNG (7:30PM CTV in Canada)
Or as Jason Priestley called the show during Friday’s Gemini Awards: 90210 with ugly people.

THE SIMPSONS (8PM FOX, Global in Canada)
Product placement done right. Lisa gets her first iPod myPOD.

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES (9PM ABC, CTV in Canada)
In the aftermath of last week’s Fairview fire, we have a sneaking suspicion that Gaby and Carlos are about to disprove the old adage that money can’t buy happiness.

BROTHER & SISTERS (10PM ABC, Global in Canada)
Kitty and Robert continue the adoption process, this TV Addict continues to ZZZzzz.

DEXTER (9PM Showtime, 10PM TMN in Canada)
With three episodes remaining in the season, Miguel Prado best be getting his affairs in order. No really, just ask Doakes, Lyla and Rudy how their respective seasons ended.
