2007 TV Year in Review (Part I)

December 27, 2007 By theTVaddict 11 Comments

Class warfare with the least casualties: If the Humphrey clan on GOSSIP GIRL are the “have nots”, the economy must not be doing as bad as everyone says. How else to explain that million dollar space they live in?

Show most likely to give nerds hope: Don’t tell your local Geek Squad guy, but in the real world, dudes like CHUCK don’t land superbabe Yvonne Strahovski.

Trend we wish were happening when we were in high school: Tyra and Landry, Serena and Dan, why weren’t ‘nerds’ cool back in the 90’s Oh, and while we’re on the subject, in our day, our the TV Addict’s family Nanny did not look anything like Grandma Saracen’s nurse.

Proof that six million bucks doesn’t buy what it used to: With it’s fetching, fighting female leads and more hype than God’s comeback, BIONIC WOMAN seemed like the show to beat… until viewers actually got a look at the revamped Jamie Somers and figured out that NBC forgot to hire decent writers.

Best show too many of you aren’t watching: Tina Fey and the team at 30 ROCK have turned their little comedy that could into the SEINFELD of the new millennium. Now of only it could get the kind of ratings Jerry’s antics did.

The TV Addict Has A Serious Problem…

December 26, 2007 By theTVaddict 19 Comments

While this news will most likely come as little surprise to fans of this web site, the TV Addict is addicted to buying TV on DVD.

Now generally — this problem is one that I’ve managed to control. Years in TVAA [TV Addicts Anonymous] combined with the recent realization that the money I’ve spent on TV boxed sets could have probably bought me a 50″ flat screen [or a house!] has curbed my spending habits immensely.

That said, vacationing in America changes everything.

Take this morning for instance. Against my better judgement, I took a ride over to the local TARGET after reading online that the third season of THE OFFICE was on sale for only $19.99!

And that my friends was mistake number one. Thirty minutes later this TV Addict left the store with a far heavier shopping bag, and one helluva lighter wallet.

BONES Seasons 1 & 2, THE OFFICE Seasons 1 & 3, DEXTER Season 1, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER Season 2, The Best of LARRY SANDERS, THE OC Season 4 and FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS Season 1.

They were all there and they were all on sale for $19.99. I run a web site called theTVaddict.com — Can you really blame me?

Got a great Boxing Day Deal to share from either Canada or the US? Post away and share the post—holiday TV on DVD love! With no end in sight to this incredibly depressing writer’s strike, DVD may be all we have to get us through the next few months.

Television’s Naughty & Nice List

December 23, 2007 By theTVaddict 15 Comments

With Christmas a mere two days away, this TV Addict can only imagine how busy Santa must be.

With that in mind, we thought we’d lend the Big Guy in Red a hand by posting our 2007 Nice & Naughty list: Television Edition. Think we left anyone off the list? Post away in the comments below.

Nice: Josh Schwartz for doing double duty this fall. Not only did he give TV Addicts a new show to obsess over with GOSSIP GIRL. He gave our good blogger friend GMMR a new TV boyfriend to stalk swoon over.

Naughty: Both the WGA and the AMPTP for not working out their differences and leaving a neatly wrapped labour agreement under our Christmas trees.

Really Naughty: The AMPTP — because let’s face it, this is all their fault.

Nice: ABC, for allowing LOSTerminds Damon Lindeloff and Carlton Cuse to end LOST on their own terms.

Naughty: Not only did NBC put the brakes on JOURNEYMAN’S journey, their plan to supersize THE OFFICE throughout September robbed fans of our traditional very special OFFICE Christmas.

Nice: Wisteria Lane Realty. Marc Cherry finally ensured an interesting neighbor moved into the neighborhood.

The Best Last Minute Holiday Gift Ever [for the TV Addict in Your Life]

December 19, 2007 By theTVaddict 4 Comments

GMMR’s early morning post alerting fans to the fantastic news that GOSSIP GIRL and PUSHING DAISIES will be taking part in the 2008 Paley Festival got this TV Addict thinking.

GMMR scooped me again! How does she do it!

Actually, it reminded me of one fantastic, incredibly affordable last minute holiday gift you can get for the TV Addict in your life. Recordings from incredible one-of-a-kind events at the Paley Center for Media.

Can’t afford to send your loved one to this year’s Paley Festival in Los Angeles? Well, thanks to the wonder that is the internet, you, or the TV Addict in your life, don’t have to miss out on the fun.

Simply head on over to audible.com or iTunes [the TV Addict recommends audible because its cheaper] to check out some of your favorite shows.

For a mere $1.95 you can listen to J.J. Abrams talk about Sydney Bristow and Felicity Porter for one hour and thirty-five minutes. Or spend forty-five minutes with the cast of BROTHERS & SISTERS, DEXTER or LOST.

Pretty much, it’s the best gift idea ever. And guaranteed to make the TV Addict in your life smile.

Amrie’s Take on TV: Best Actresses of 2007

December 18, 2007 By theTVaddict 10 Comments

And then there were 2! In 2 weeks, it’ll be 2008. I have to say wow again. As promised, I’m back this week with my Favorite Actresses of 2007. Before we jump in and start my list of fabulous ladies, big apologies to Edward James Olmos, Alec Baldwin, and Jon Hamm from Mad Men for not including them on my Actor list!!

Here we have my top “11” favorite actresses from 2007, and some honorable mentions. Believe me, I’m sure there are people missing, and I’m sure I’ll read your comments and know that I was wrong to exclude someone amazing, but here’s where I am right now (I used a lot of leeway on that top “11” list. There are definitely way more than 11 that made it)!

Connie Britton, Tami Taylor, Friday Night Lights
I sing Connie Britton’s praises just about every 5 seconds of every single day. She is gorgeous, she is fantastic, she makes me believe in her pains and struggles and just everything that Tami is going through. I believe that she loves her husband (Coach Eric Taylor) and that she is trying to do the best she can for her daughters and all the students at Dillon. She could easily be another football coach’s wallflower wife, but the way the character is written, and the way Connie plays it, she jumps off the screen. The fact that she isn’t getting accolades and awards and nominations just blows my mind.

The Women of the 13 colonies, Mary McDonnell (President Roslin), Tricia Helfer (Gina/Six), Katee Sackhoff (Starbuck), Grace Park (Boomer/Sharon), Michele Forbes (Admiral Cain), Battlestar Galactica
I didn’t want to get involved in what I called “another SciFi show that won’t hold my interest.” Then I watched one episode and I was hooked. Season 3 and the mid-way movie Razor just prove that these women deserve shelves upon shelves of awards because of how downright mind-blowing they are. I don’t want Roslin to die from the cancer that’s going to eventually over take her (I mean, she is the dying leader from the prophecy, right?). Like Michael C. Hall’s Dexter (a killer), who I shouldn’t identify with, I completely identify with Helfer’s Six and Gina, Cylons who just want the best for their own race. Grace Park is wonderful, so moving. Michele Forbes exudes awesomeness. And Sackhoff? She is just cool. And angry, and awesome. And big props to her for making a few of the scenes in Bionic Woman remotely watchable.

The Pie Hos, Kristen Chenowith (Olive Snook,) and Anna Friel (Charlotte Chuck Charles), Pushing Daisies
Olive is so in love with Ned. And she’s such a good dog-sitter of Digby. And she’s the perfect foil to Chuck. And she’s a great friend to Lily and Vivian. And I love her interaction with Emerson. She’s charming, and she speaks quickly, and she sings, and she dances. I’ve been a fan of hers for years, and it’s nice to see her getting celebrated for such a perfect role for her! Anna Friel is delicious. She plays her role with such wide eyed abandon. She’s so wounded and damaged, and dying to be loved, and missing the ladies she does love, and I love this role and I’m so happy that it was written and she was cast.

Channel Surfing with C.T.

December 17, 2007 By theTVaddict 12 Comments

I caught the special Christmas episode of SUPERNATURAL the other night and… brace yourselves… I really liked it. What can I say? I’m a sucker for little old people who happen to be demon-worshipping pagans. Is it just me, or does this show — which, as many C.T. haters out there know, I’ve only see a few times — love to play with the homoeroticism between the brothers? When Sam and Dean tried to buy a wreath, the guy selling them obviously thought they were a couple and they played it up, very tongue in cheek. What? Is it just me? I know this isn’t the first time I’ve seen that kind of exchange played. Meanwhile, for those who recommended episodes for me to check out after my confession to, um, not liking (to say the least) this show, you might be interested to know that I’ve been doing just that and will be offering up a new piece in the next couple weeks which will… um… well, let’s just see how my viewings go, shall we?

Is it time for season three of DEXTER yet? I seriously love that show. Yes, I’d be a tad happier if they didn’t write every season-concluding episode as if it were a series finale. Would it kill them to give a guy a cliffhanger?

Am I the only one who fast-forwards through SURVIVOR’s “remember your fallen tribe mates” crap each and every season? I suppose if you’re going to do a three-hour episode, it’s good to have a block of time in which everyone can go make snacks, phone loved ones, check their e-mail. And if there’s one thing I never, ever want to hear another contestant on this show say it’s, “I’m not ready to go home yet.” I’d rather listen to them whine and complain about wanting to go home than have the final four using the worst line in the book instead of just being honest and saying, “You know something? I worked every bit as hard as you did, and I want that cold, cool million bucks. So hell no, I don’t want you voting my butt out.”

Before the new season of BIG BROTHER begins in February, Julie Chen should be forced to watch Jeff Probst whether he’s hosting tribal council or a reunion show. This guy is both entertaining and asks the hard questions. He calls people on their moronic moves, and finds out what we all want to know. “Courtney, are you anorexic, bulemic or delusional?” or “James, you had two hidden immunity idols and didn’t use either. Are you a moron?” Okay, so I’m paraphrasing.

2008 Golden Globe Nominations

December 13, 2007 By theTVaddict 18 Comments

With the Golden Globe Nominations just announced, the biggest question — aside from why on earth DEXTER, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER* and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA didn’t get recognized — is which actors, if any, are going to cross the picket line to attend the show.

As usual, the TV Addict’s personal favorites are in ORANGE. With the “if they WIN AGAIN” I’ll gouge my eyes out in RED and “who did they pay off in the Hollywood Foreign Press to get this nomination?” in GREEN.

Amrie’s Take on TV: Best Actors of 2007

December 11, 2007 By theTVaddict 16 Comments

best actors tv 2007

Here we are, three weeks from the end of 2007. Feels like the year flew by, doesn’t it? Is it too early to start talking bests and worsts, favorites and least favorites? If it is, who cares ha, let’s discuss, shall we?

In the first of a three part column, I want to talk about my favorite actors and the characters they played in 2007. I’m sure I’m missing some of your favorites; hell, I’m missing some of my own favorites, but I had to narrow it down or the list would never end!

Michael C. Hall, Dexter Morgan, DEXTER
Can you imagine any other actor playing Dexter? Michael C. Hall is funny. And attractive. And endearing. I love this character. No matter how deeply disturbing, or dark, the character and show are, I am completely intrigued, enlightened, obsessed, you name the word of praise, I’ve used it to express my feelings about it. Just today, I asked my roommate Colleen why I was so incredibly “on his side”, meaning, why do I root for Dexter? Plain and simple, it’s the person playing him. I wouldn’t have any interest in relating to him if it wasn’t for the beautiful and fractured and breathtaking way MCH plays it.

Matthew Fox, Jack Shephard, LOST
I watched Party of Five. I know Matthew Fox had a lot of meaty storylines to work with, what with Daphne the pregnant stripper and all of the Kirsten problems. But I didn’t realize that when Lost started in 2004 that Matthew Fox as Jack would blow me away on a constant basis. He’s damaged. He’s angry. He’s sad. He’s jealous. He’s gullible and vulnerable and full of doubt and extremely stubborn. When he cries, I want to cry. When he’s fired up, I’m fired up. His intensity keeps me hooked. When the show wasn’t working for me, Matthew Fox still was. And he’s super hot, am I right?

Kyle Chandler, Coach Eric Taylor, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS
Coach Eric Taylor is hands down my favorite character in the history of my TV obsession (and that’s saying a whole lot. I’ve been hooked on TV since before I can remember. Lots of characters have come into my life in that time)! He’s full of love for his family, for his team, for his town. When he took the job in Austin, I was with his family as they counted the seconds until he returned to Dillon. His marriage to Tami Taylor is the stuff of which dreams are made. They fight, but deep down there’s a true bond and I learn more from watching these characters than any other TV marriage we’ve seen in recent years. He doesn’t always know the right things to say, but he finds a way to say them. I don’t have enough good things to say about him. He’s the best.
