2007 Paley Festival

March 3, 2007 By theTVaddict Leave a Comment

As you may have guessed from the giant image above, the TV Addict will be reporting live from the 2007 PALEY FESTIVAL starting this Wednesday March 7. Needless to say I’m thrilled to have this opportunity, and cannot wait to attend panels for some of my (and your) favourite shows. I’ll be attending the panels for DEXTER, NIP/TUCK, PRISON BREAK, HEROES and UGLY BETTY. Check back all next week for in-depth reports. And if you see a TV Addict drooling over his MAC Laptop, don’t be afraid to come by and say ‘HI!’

Last night was THE OFFICE panel, and my friend Kathie from GIVE ME MY REMOTE was lucky enough to attend. To read her fantastic full report, click here.

Help Get the Paley Festival on iTunes

February 15, 2007 By theTVaddict 3 Comments

Each year, the Museum of Radio and Television holds the annual Paley Festival celebrating the best that television has to offer. Over twelve nights from March 1 to 15, 2007, MTR will unite stars, creators, and their fans for behind-the-scenes looks at the most talked-about shows on TV. During these events, the audience watches episodes or highlights of the featured work and participates in a Q&A with the show’s cast and creative team.

The year, the Paley Festival has once again managed to secure a phenomenal line-up, featuring some of theTVaddict.com’s personal favourites, including: DEXTER, BROTHERS & SISTERS, UGLY BETTY, THE SIMPSONS, NIP/TUCK, HEROES, PRISON BREAK, THE OFFICE, JERICHO, THE CLOSER and yes, even AMERICAN IDOL (click here for the entire schedule).

Yet each year, with only a few hundred seats available for each night — and the entire festival selling out within hours — fans are more often then not left upset and disappointed when they’re not able to obtain tickets. While the obvious solution is to secure a larger venue for the festival, the Museum seems hesitant to do so. Most likely not wanting to dilute the intimate nature of each event. Thus, it’s up to theTVaddict.com to put forth another solution.

Why not make the events available for download on iTunes the following day! Not only will the Museum earn large amounts of money (something every museum needs, nay loves), more importantly — millions of fans across North America will have the opportunity to see the magic that is a night at the Paley Festival. Having attended last year’s FAMILY GUY event, theTVaddict can say first hand that it was worth every penny I spent on eBay for the tickets!

Please post a comment in support of this idea. If enough people voice their opinion you never know what will happen. Come March 3 we could all be downloading THE OFFICE Paley Festival event and enjoying what very few lucky fans will have had the opportunity to see.

Why Is No One Watching Supernatural?

February 8, 2007 By theTVaddict 205 Comments

By Alexander B. Huls, Mondo Magazine

Why you should be watching Supernatural, and thoughts on why you might not be.

If you’re reading this and wondering: “What the heck is Supernatural?”, then you”ve come to the right place and also broken my heart.

Supernatural revolves around two brothers, Dean and Sam Winchester, who are nomadic demon hunters that ride from town to town in order to investigate and vanquish supernatural evil. And who doesn’t love nomadic demon hunters? In each episode the brothers grapple with a monster-of-the-week (much like early The X-Files), often inspired by urban legends and folk tales. Not content to settle for a tired formula, Supernatural introduces a greater dramatic mythology dealing with a Winchester-hating über-demon with a very nefarious plan for both the brothers and the world. And who doesn’t love nefarious plans?

Our Golden Globe Winning Picks

January 15, 2007 By theTVaddict Leave a Comment

The TV Addict here with your 100% guaranteed (okay, not really) picks for the winners of this year’s GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS. Be sure to check back with theTVaddict.com at 8PM tonight for our first annual GOLDEN GLOBE PARTY! (And remember, IF TONY SHALOUB WINS another award, the riot starts at 11:05 sharp!)

BEST TELEVISION DRAMA
24
BIG LOVE
GREY’S ANATOMY
HEROES
LOST

The difference between the Golden Globes and the Emmys is that the Globes are decided by approx. 75 foreign journalists. This TV Addict is betting that the endless cheerleader buzz, the world wide appeal of the show and the culturally diverse (really good-looking!) cast will ensure that HEROES goes home with the gold.

BEST ACTOR TELEVISION DRAMA
Patrick Dempsey, GREY’S ANATOMY
Keifer Sutherland, 24
Bill Paxton, BIG LOVE
Hugh Laurie, HOUSE
Michael C. Hall, DEXTER

The Globe Voters don’t want to tempt fate. They already angered Tony Soprano by not nominating him, do they really need to piss of a brilliant serial killer as well? Michael C. Hall SHOULD win, and WILL win for his brilliant portayal of Dexter on the show with the same name.

BEST ACTRESS TELEVISION DRAMA
Patricia Arquette, MEDIUM
Evangeline Lily, LOST
Edie Falco, THE SOPRANOS
Ellen Pompeo, GREY’S ANATOMY
Kyra Sedgwick, THE CLOSER

No award show can be complete without one award going to a SOPRANO. (Lord knows the Globe voters don’t want to anger ‘The Family’). Expect Edie Falco to take home the only award THE SOPRANOS see this year.

BEST TELEVISION COMEDY
UGLY BETTY
WEEDS
ENTOURAGE
THE OFFICE
DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES

Best Comedy this year is a tough call. As much as THE OFFICE deserves to win, I’m going to be a maverick and once again pick the up-and-coming favourite — UGLY BETTY. Do you think the mysterious Fey Summers will make an appearance at the Globes?

BEST ACTOR TELEVISION COMEDY
Alec Baldwin, 30 ROCK
Steve Carell, THE OFFICE
Jason Lee, MY NAME IS EARL
Zach Braff, SCRUBS
Tony Shaloub, MONK

As much as I’d like to see Zach Braff walk away with a much deserved statue, I have a feeling that this is Alec Baldwin’s year (Not that there’s anything wrong with that). In fact, I’m pretty much happy with whoever wins in this category, except for Tony Shaloub. If Shaloub walks away with another award for MONK, I’m packing it in and picking up a book.

BEST ACTRESS TELEVISION COMEDY
America Ferrera, UGLY BETTY
Marcia Cross, DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES
Felicity Huffman, DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, THE NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE
Mary Louise Parker, WEEDS

The Golden Globes have a history of awarding the IT girl — see: Jennifer Garner (ALIAS) and Keri Russell (FELICITY. Expect America Ferrera to walk away with the gold. Let’s hope she gets some tips from Wilhelmina Slater on how to dress for an award show!

BEST MINI-SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE, MADE FOR TV
Bleak House
Broken Trail
Elizabeth I
Mrs. Harris
Prime Suspect: The Final Act

Full Disclosure: I haven’t seen a single one of these movies/mini-series, but the golden rule of award shows is always bet on British! Hollywood is infatuated with Hellen Mirren, and she’s already won the Emmy. Expect ELIZABETH I to take home the gold.

THE L WORD: Season 4 Preview

January 10, 2007 By theTVaddict 2 Comments

l word season 4 preview

By: Amrie (My Take on TV)

Last week, I got a very nice email from the Digital Entertainment department of Showtime. Showtime is the new HBO (at least that what we’ve been saying at thetvaddict for what feels like forever!). Dexter is amazing, Weeds is phenomenal. Sleeper Cell is one of the greatest things I’ve seen on television in recent months. Since 2004, one of my favorite shows on TV has aired on Showtime – The L Word. Imagine my surprise when that aforementioned email asked me if I’d like the opportunity to review and discuss the new season of one of my favorites? I jumped on the idea.

For the past four days, I’ve been holed up in front of the TV, watching, and re-watching, the first 6 episodes of Season Four and I must say that it’s fantastic so far. It’s back to the lightness that we got to experience in Season 1. After all the pain and the intensity of the first three seasons, the girls are living and loving as usual, but their bond as a group seems to have grown over time.

For those of you who missed last season, and even those of you who missed the season premiere (which aired this past Sunday on Showtime), here’s a bit of info on where we left our girls and what they‘re up to as the season begins:

TV’s Top 10 Shows of 2006

December 29, 2006 By theTVaddict 15 Comments

DEXTER An hour long drama about a serial killer. Does anybody actually want to see that? Luckily for Showtime [and fans of quality TV] a record number of people did — and for good reason. DEXTER featured an Emmy worthy performance by Michael C Hall (Dexter Morgan), compelling stories and most importantly (in the age of serialized ‘when are we going to get a resolution’ dramas) an actual ending. The show was the surprise hit of 2006 — and no, DEXTER isn’t number one on our list because we’re really quite scared of what he’ll do to us if he’s not happy.
A Favourite YouTube Moment — Dexter Confesses

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA No show on television dares to challenge its viewers as much as BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. Whether its showing us a different side of terrorism, or portraying its ‘human heroes’ as people willing to do some seriously awful things (yes, you heard us Starbuck) — the show’s writing team, led by the brilliant Ronald D Moore, never takes the easy way out. Let’s hope our heroes don’t find Earth too quickly, as this TV addict doesn’t wish to see BATTLESTAR end anytime soon.
A Favourite YouTube Moment — Second Season Finale

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER Three words: Robing Sparkles and Swarley. Oh wait, there’s more…. Grinch, Suit Up, Steak Sauce, pretty much anything that comes out of Barney’s mouth. This year, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER truly came into its own, found its voice, and evolved into the FRIENDS replacement that we’ve so desperately needed. With a charming cast and razor sharp dialogue, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER was officially the funniest, most talked about, three camera comedy on TV.
A Favourite YouTube Moment — Robin’s Secret

GREY’S ANATOMY What’s been lost amidst all the behind-the-scenes antics is that 2006 was by far the strongest year to date for the doctors of Seattle Grace. With water-cooler moments ranging from the fantastic Superbowl episode, to Denny’s death and more recently the deterioration of Dr. Burke and Cristina’s relationship, GREY’S ANATOMY is still our go-to drama for emotional high-stakes drama.
A Favourite YouTube Moment — Grey’s Anatomy The Fray

SCRUBS SCRUBS is that rare breed of show that simply does everything well. It tugs at the heart-strings as well as any medical drama while at the same time manages to be as funny as any episode of HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER. After six years, the show has developed such a rich stock of supporting characters [Ted the lawyer, the Todd, Security guard with a hook etc…) that it has essentially evolved into a live-action equivalent of THE SIMPSONS (but with more heart). If you’re still not on the bandwagon, do yourself a favour and check into Sacred Heart soon. Sadly, if the rumours are true, it may be the last season you’ll be able to.
A Favourite YouTube Moment — Dr. Cox Loses It

The 2006 TV Year in Review (Part 2)

December 28, 2006 By theTVaddict 2 Comments

Putting the MUST SEE back into MUST SEE TV: NBC, for removing ‘The Donald’ from Thursday night and giving us a two-hour block of seriously funny television (MY NAME IS EARL, THE OFFICE, SCRUBS, 30 ROCK) for the first time in years.

Proof that Emmy Voters don’t actually own televisions: The continued snubbing of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and Kristen Bell (who plays Veronica Mars’ title character) whenever nomination season rolls around.

It’s Not TV…. It’s HBO SHOWTIME: Thanks to WEEDS, DEXTER and SLEEPER CELL, SHOWTIME is where it’s at. HBO is so four years ago.

R.I.P. The Serialized Drama Apparently, if it doesn’t take place on a mysterious island populated with Others and a polar bear, viewers don’t care. KIDNAPPED, VANISHED, RUNAWAY, THE NINEand SIX DEGREES all failed to attract an audience. And while most of the shows didn’t deserve one, KIDNAPPED and THE NINE deserved a far better fate.

Why We Love YouTube: Rosie vs Star, Rosie vs Clay, Rosie vs Asia, Rosie vs Trump. All we know is that YouTube is our first stop online when we’re dying to know who Rosie was angry with yesterday. Rosie, theTVaddict.com loves you — don’t hurt us. (But if she does, expect to see it on YouTube tomorrow!)

The award for most controversial show both ON-screen and off goes to: GREY’S ANATOMY. We can’t decide what’s more exciting. McSteamy vs. McDreamy or Isiah Washington vs. Patrick Dempsey.

Trend The National Enquirer hates most: By choosing to out themselves, such stars as T.R. Knight (GREY’S ANATOMY) and Neil Patrick Harris (HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER) have given the tabloids two less faces to run on their “Who’s gay and who’s not?” covers.

Proof the Seinfeld Curse is over: Julia Louise-Dreyfus succeeding with her own sitcom, THE NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE. Better yet, it’s actually funny!

Okay, we may have jumped the gun with that proclamation Just ask Michael Richards how his career is going!

Most annoying trend on television: TV shows incessantly talking about other shows on the same network.

Most guilty party: 30 ROCK shamelessly promoting DATELINE, the G.E. Trivection Oven, NBC Universal, LATE NIGHT WITH CONAN O’BRIEN — Okay so their not so subliminal advertising works. But still… it’s annoying.

The 2006 TV Year in Review (Part 1)

December 27, 2006 By theTVaddict 4 Comments

Best sports drama that really isn’t about sports: FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS. With actors as engaging as Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton (TV’s hottest new couple) and stories that have us on the edge of our seat, who cares about football?

Worst sports drama that really isn’t about sports: ONE TREE HILL. What viewers see in this badly acted drama focusing on the oldest high school students since John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John escapes us.

Best unexpected guest star: Martha Stewart offering UGLY BETTY’s Wilhelmina Slater tips on how to cook a Thanksgiving turkey.

Best expected guest star: Alec Baldwin making us laugh in 30 ROCK, SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE and THE DEPARTED. Baldwin simply steals every scene he’s in.

Saddest guest star: Rachel Dratch, the former star of 30 ROCK, being demoted to occasional guest star and cat wrangler in place of the prettier, but not as funny Jane Krakowski.

Best ‘farm team’ for current TV hits: SIX FEET UNDER. Thanks for giving us Rachel Griffiths (BROTHERS & SISTERS), Jeremy Sisto (the short-lived KIDNAPPED), Michael C Hall (DEXTER) and Peter Krause (THE LOST ROOM).

Longest running show no one we know has ever watched: Believe it or not, GIRLFRIENDS is currently in its seventh season. Quick! Name two cast members! We thought as much.

Proof that the “sophomore slump” needn’t be fatal: DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES’ third season showed that you can jump the shark and not wind up swimming with the fishes.

Worst holiday-special scheduling: Once again, the devilishly delightful Treehouse Of Terror episode of THE SIMPSONS aired the weekend after Halloween.

Celeb we most hope will not land a reality show: That’s right, K-Fed, we’re talking about you. And to those in talks to put this human train wreck on the airwaves, whatever you’re paying him… we’ll double it to keep this crap off our screens.
